Agriculture Ministry to distribute 1 million seedlings to fight air pollution

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry is launching a campaign to tackle the air pollution problem and high levels of particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter.

The campaign is in cooperation with the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the private sector.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Sri-on said on Thursday (January 30): “This project is called the ‘Green City Initiative by MOAC’ and will be kicked off on February 9 at Siam Paragon Shopping Complex. We plan to distribute seedlings of six plants that are known to be effective in absorbing air pollution.”

The six plants to be distributed to participants of the activity, which will be presided over by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, are little yellow star, spider plant, fern, coatbuttons, cypress pine and calathea roseopicta. “These can be planted either indoors, in the garden, or along the roads to help absorb air pollution and build the immune system for Bangkok in the long term,” he added. “Furthermore, it could lead to a career opportunity in growing these seedlings and selling them if more people are interested.”

Chalermchai said that after the campaign kicks off, agencies under BMA and private partners will continue to distribute seedlings to people in Bangkok and its perimeter areas, with the aim to distribute one million seedlings in total. “Interested peoole can register at the website www.green-city.online, and select their preferred location to pick up the seedlings at a maximum of five seedlings per person,” he added.

“The campaign will also give away seedlings to temples, schools, hospitals and public places in Bangkok who express interest in becoming lungs of the city, and will later expand to other provinces in the future,” added Chalermchai.

Anybody projected how many seedlings are going to die in the first month?

spider plant

During the summer, spider plants may produce tiny white flowers on long stems, as well as baby spider plants (offsets) called “pups.” The pups look like tiny spiders, hence the plant’s name! Spider plants are known for their air-purifying ability, though a large amount of plants is required to truly reap the benefits.

I hope they are giving out instructions with the seedlings. Calathea roseopicta for example can't be planted roadside as they don't favour a lot of direct sunlight. They're marvellous houseplants and o.k. outside in the shade though.

What a great pollution solution. I have two words for it.

Too funny.

And 2 more.

Too little.

More likely going along the road, digging them up and selling them

Why not just stop polluting the air

1 million seedlings dead of the drought.

The photograph says it all. The extended digit clearly says "If you believe this you will believe anything"????

The government of jokes, all good at telling them!

More to set fire to!

Logic?

Cool, more plants to burn.

How high must you throw them to get the pollution attached to them?

I don't know if this tree would work in Thailand but they claim its the best for the US.

Empress Tree

And this is interesting. Weed. It's the hemp that is used for fiber, cloth, oil, food and other purposes. This could make all the bags of the future needed in Thailand.

Hrmmm. I'm reminded of what happened to the last seedlings project. As I recall, someone sold them. And was declared innocent, forgiven and bought a football club instead.

Never know when a few hundred saplings might come in handy.

And then someone sets fire to them.

Somebody should ask these clowns how many street trees are going to have to be chopped down to bring Thais the dubious benefits of 5G.

Instead of tackling the root of the problem, this government prefers to apply a compress to a wooden leg.

I witnessed some  "logic" recently during the very bad smog days ..someone had gathered up loads of leaf litter and other stuff and was burning it making a lot of smoke,  neighbours complained , management company came and put out the fire..then came back with machetes and started cutting all the trees down...no trees no leafs to burn "logic"  luckily the same neighbour who called them to put out the fire  managed to stop the felling before too much damage was done.

No need, just stick the 5G transmitters to the trees with a bit of double sided sticky tape ????
