webfact Posted February 11, 2020 Share Posted February 11, 2020 Thai man collecting wood steps on old mine in Dan Chai, Phrae Picture: Chaing Mai News Police were called after a hospital in Den Chai, Phrae in northern Thailand reported that a man had had part of his ankle blown off after stepping on an explosive device while collecting bamboo. The incident happened on Monday around 10 am. Tawatchai, 42, was with his 17 year old son Akra and several other relatives. They were collecting bamboo to make chopsticks for sale. Police went to the area and found the remains of an old mine. The part of Tawatchai's ankle could not be found. The police are not sure what kind of device exploded but said that formerly the 800 rai area was used by the military. A Phoo Yai Ban (local village chief) confirmed that Tawatchai and his party had asked for permission to cut wood in the area.
