Coronavirus and Thais

I was in the pharmacy today and a group of Thai teenagers were in there. They were talking to the pharmasist about the right type of face masks to protect them from the virus. They were advised N95 but bought the basic masks and left thinking they would be safe. Here's the rub they are worried about the coronavirus but all got on their motorbikes. Half of them not even old enought to hold a licence, riding off in flip flops and no helmets feeling safe.

Im no so sure about what the rub actually is here, how does "teenagers" using the only form or transport available ontradict their concern over corona virus?

Don't worry they most surely had protective Amulets and maybe even magical tattoos !!!

They were probably told by the pharmacist that they are all out of N95 (not that they stock them) and that the standard ones are as just as good, are about 115 baht cheaper than the N95 and are almost sold out, too easy.

As for the helmets, flip flops, well, this is the trend, haven't you noticed, and riding without lights at night so the ghosts don't follow them ????

I have seen many people in Bangkok and Pattaya wearing these masks, partly to stop breathing in 2.5s......then they pull the mask down to have a ciggie!

It's just yet another sly way of having a go at Thais.

Darwin will take care of them

They had no helmets. No proper shoes. Stuff that can make a big difference on a motorbike. Yet they are worried about a flu

Helmets have no effect on coronavirus.

thanks so much for taking time out of your busy day to belabor the obvious.

Now, perhaps I can assist you.

The absence of shoes, the absence of helmets and the complete and utter absence of enforcement of those requirments are common occurences in their life.

These are also relatively  expensive items often deemed unnessecary especially in smaller, more rural communities.

They have never known different. It is a way of life. They survive their motorcycle journeys every day of their lives, they do not consider themselves in any danger

Covid19 however is a new threat that has permeated their news, social media the national consciousness, and according to their government, can be deterred if not thwarted using an inexpensive mask. The entire nation is hysterical.

They do not have your enlightened perspective, they do not see it your way, as, in fact, it seems you cannot see it their way.

The ops post is nothing more than passive agressive claptrap to point out to us how incredibly backward thais are. It lacks empathy and is merely judgemental

Understand now?

Most certainly, if being right is the sole point of the exercise he is a real winner.

Charles Darwin has been dead for quite a while now. He's not taking care of anyone.

Mad context....but what can one expect with on one side farangs mongering for unprotected sex with Thai prostitutes entertainers and on the other side, the ladies accepting it  for the extra buck....

It took me a long time to adjust to seeing thai women on motorbikes with flip flops, no helmet, no protective gear, with babies resting on their laps just behind the handle bars. madness.

My guess is that air pollution and cigarettes will make OLD men in Thailand more likely to die from Coronavirus. ????

Possibly one of the most passive aggressive posts I have seen in TV for a while and that's saying something.

Thais aren't backwards.  They're reacting to the media saturation about this threat in the same manner that most people around the world are.  Since so much is unknown about the ultimate transmissibility and mortality of the virus that contributes to the concern.  The real point of the OP seems to be that a lot of people everywhere are not understanding where this virus threat should be placed in their lives, considering their other daily activities.  Lots of potential examples, but let's just take a look at Dengue Fever.  It's viral and endemic to Thailand.  It has a mortality rate of 2 to 20 percent.

Up until the virus emerged as a threat, the media in Thailand were 24/7 on the PPM2.5 issue.  Last week (after several days of not checking), I looked at the air quality index for Thailand and found the PPM2.5 level was higher than it had ever been.  Not a peep from the media, social or otherwise.

Thais aren't backwards....like most people we react to information from people we consider credible sources and try to find a way to solve or mitigate the issue.

You pretended to ask a question. You got an answer. I didn't know that you already had all the answers.
