One more Covid-19 infected person was found in Thailand on Saturday (February 29), the Ministry of Public Health told a press conference.

“The latest infected patient is a Thai man aged 21, who has been exposed to foreign tourists,” said Dr Sukhum Kanjanapimai, permanent secretary at the Public Health Ministry. “He is being treated in isolation at Nopparat Ratchathani Hospital in Bangkok.”

The discovery of a new patient brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand to 42. “The number of confirmed infected patients in Thailand currently under hospital care is 14, while 28 have fully recovered and been discharged,” added Sukhum.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul added that his ministry is planning to give away sanitary face masks on Monday (March 2) at the offices of nine departments under the ministry. “We will give away three face masks per person to alleviate the short supply problem,” he said. “Please be socially responsible and do not take them to sell to others. Also refrain from taking the free masks if you can afford to buy your own.”

Covid-19 has been labelled a dangerous contagious disease and will take effect on Sunday (March 1), according to a Public Health Ministry announcement in the Royal Gazette on Saturday.

The news abroad says that people are asymptomatic, that is, they carry it but have no symptoms. That is very scary and dangerous. Once our leaders believe that, we can tackle it.

With a center in the US in lock down, it is getting worse! Personally, I am declaring it a pandemic.

So where are the reports of the foreign tourists being isolated and where did they come from?

In theory yes but it's dépend on many factors. I'm pretty sure a 29 years old female doctor in Wuhan died from this last week.

I will no longer be seen in public without my wife. Don't want to be mistaken as a tourist!

The way the simple, xenophobic, poorly educated minds work in this country, that, also may be misinterpreted!

Three free masks per person.

The way Thais flock to anything "free", like moths to a light bulb, I wouldn't show up if the paid me and gave me a case!

Aren't large gathering discouraged, giving away free masks is sure way to get a crowd. Just as long as they do not protest about anything, but feel free to cough and splutter on each other

How do you label the flu then? World disaster.

Just keep letting infected people come to Thailand and risk your population just for the all mighty Baht

True - anything that can kill you is scary. But we should put it into perspective. If in an absolutely worst case, a third of the population ends up catching it, and 3% of those 33% die, 75% of which are over 60, then:

1) For the over 60's, there is a 0.75% chance of any one of us dying

2) For the under 60's, there is a 0.25% chance of any one of us dying

Compare that with 62 people dying on the roads every day - that's a 0.16% chance of any one of us dying in the next 5 years, and every 5 years after that, but we still venture out and cars haven't been banned yet.

Stay safe ....

The latest I've seen says even after you catch it, get sick and recover you can still pass it on to others.

Unless of course it's a money making opportunity, then there's no problem. The Health Minister 'promises' there will be no Coronovirus problem at a crowd of thousands:

Yes because if it didn't happen in the US it didn't happen at all right?

So little is actually known. There are many holes in the various theories. But from the massive amount of reading that I've done on this, I'd personally say that there is a serious over reaction.

Two things are certain 1) the topic sure makes for great click bait; 2) it has definitely, temporarily ravaged the greedy stock markets.

My doctor (who specialised in virology) told me that:

1) Symptoms appear up to 14 days after infection

2) Infected people are shedding the virus (potentially infecting others) for around 3 or 4 days before symptoms appear, and for around 3 or 4 days after symptoms disappear. So, if it's possible to isolate all the infected people, or if an increasing number of people (having had it) are immune to it, then it will vanish quite quickly just like the flu.

So you can pass it on to others after you recover, but only for a few days. People don't carry it long term in the same way as they do for diseases like HIV or hepatitis.

Flu can't spread to 4 billion people. No one has immunity against nCoV2019.

They did all go back to Italy last week

And as yet no info about other effects - remember with the zika outbreak it was found to cause deformed babies with tiny heads. We have no idea at all about any side effects of the Coronavirus. These unknowns - including as you say the concern it will prove to be a chronic infection that keeps reoccurring I suspect is a major worry at present. This is why(at this stage) comparing the virus to traffic accidents and eating hamburgers is a bit silly.

Exactly. So to should be all the bad habits that could kill us.

Keep calm, and carry on.

People do not necessarily become immune to the virus after getting it.  Reinfection can occur.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS
Last evening dining out with friends, one of their uncles, who's graduated with a master's degree and who worked in Shenzhen Hospital (Guangdong Province, China) sent him the following notes on Coronavirus for guidance:
1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
10. Can't emphasise enough - drink plenty of water!
THE SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

Your doctor is probably correct about regular viruses like influenza, cold, etc. But this one is a coronavirus. All coronaviruses(SARS, MERS, Ebola) originate in animals and have not been in humans before, and cannot be categorized the same. We just don't know how they will act. For those that believe this is just a different flu, sorry, wrong.
