Bangkok: Proposals to spend 1.4 billion baht on upgrading CCTV

The Traffic and Transportation department has announced proposals to upgrade CCTV coverage in Bangkok.

The move would see old CCTV centers and out of date cameras replaced.

More cameras would have the capability for automatic number plate recognition.

Quiet areas deemed risky for the public would also see better coverage to promote safety.

Panurak Klannurak is asking for a budget of 1,448,317,000 baht for a total of 16 projects. The five main ones are as follows:

1. Upgrading CCTV centers that are ten years out of date.

2. Improving back-up radio communications

3. Initiating CCTV coverage that can be moved from one area to another

4. Installing CCTV in risky areas like public parks, new roads without coverage and boat stations.

5. Replacing CCTV cameras that are ten years old.

The proposals will be forwarded to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration for consideration.

Thaivisa notes that CCTV coverage on the capital's roads has been a cash cow for the authorities. Dozens of areas of the city - especially in terms of prohibiting lane changing - have seen hundreds of thousands of drivers fined and vast sums collected.

Say it with me brothers and sisters - shout it from the roof tops!

Cha Ching!

Literally turning into a dystopian nightmare.

"capability for automatic number plate recognition"

and, possibly, facial recognition (as in China).

Exactly How much off that is Really being used for the Project ?

Bangkok continues to improve apace.

So many upcountry bashers on the forum just can't understand why we get all the goodies. We work and provide GDP while much of the countryside sits on its rear ends, drinking and moaning.

Congratulations to all you cash cows, you must be very proud. Enjoy all the goodies...????

Whenever they need cash, CCTV is always a good resource

Would be better if the existing cameras worked first as most don't and aren't even connected.
