USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia Mission Director Peter A. Malnak, right, handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) to Dr. Tanarak Plipat, Deputy Director General, Department of Disease Control of Thailand Ministry of Public Health at a handover ceremony in Nonthaburi, Thailand (Wiraporn Srisuwanwattana/USAID)

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Regional Development Mission for Asia handed over personal protective equipment to the Public Health Ministry on Monday (March 9) as part of assistance to Thailand in combating the spread of Covid-19.

This assistance package, delivered by mission director Peter A Malnak, comes at the request of the Public Health Ministry, according to a USAID statement.

The equipment includes 10,000 gloves, 5,000 surgical masks, 5,000 surgical gowns, 5,000 respirator masks, 5,000 shoe covers, 5,100 surgical caps, 2,500 face shields and 500 protective goggles. The Thai government will distribute this equipment to health clinics in areas in greatest need of the supplies, the statement said.

“Today’s handover of personal protective equipment is another example of the strong partnership between the United States and the Royal Thai government, whose collaboration in addressing emerging disease threats spans decades,” Malnak said. “These critical supplies from the American people will help support medical professionals and health workers as Thailand responds to Covid-19.”

“This is a lesson to strengthen our public health system not only in Thailand but also worldwide,” remarked Dr Tanarak Plipat, deputy director-general of the Public Health Ministry’s Disease Control Department. “We are taking this opportunity to express our appreciation to the American people for the personal protective equipment, which will help Thai healthcare professionals in their Covid-19 response.”

In addition to the emergency assistance, and broader coordination on Covid-19 diagnostic capacity across the Asean region, the US works in close partnership with the Thai government on a range of programmes to combat infectious diseases. In response to these challenges, USAID is building upon over a decade of support in the campaign against avian influenza, and through its Global Health Security programme, the statement added.

"We are rich!"

"Are these the ones from the Americans?"

That sounds like the perfect mix to make some buck out of by exporting it to China. I guess that will ship together with the hoarded masks.

Have to make up some of the losses from lesser tourism somewhere, right?

Heck, why doesn't USAID cough up some of it to American expats living here, since the Thai government sure as hell won't bother with us?

Americans need it, especially in NYC, more than Thais!!

Take it back!!!

Yeah! You are right.

This is pure theatrical tokenism, nothing more, to signal that USA hasn't entirely given up on Thailand as a nation, even though it has basically lost it to China's grasp and will be waiting like a bald eagle to snatch it's former pet back, when and if the time is right. Just don't expect any big buck handouts or special favours to generals and despots, like in the past, is the other message sent by this little gift.

However, as someone else has alluded, given the low official cases of Coronavirus in Thailand, every health professional should be scratching their head like a bad case of lice wondering how the hell did LOS miss the bug so far? Miracle, anyone? ????

Dr Tanarak Plipat is expecting a call from Thammanat shortly to arrange the delivery the PPE.

My first thought was "Lie detector kit" ????

Just don't let a certain politician get his hands on it

And I wonder how many hi-so folks have ordered whatever, expecting that they come first?

With the Americans the ones they are being sold back to.

So, 1 delivery load to a small 7/11 then

Just relabel the boxes with "love  from Payut" (same as during the last major flood, only different scumbag) and distribute them to the plebs.

Pure theatrics; how much did that 'USAID' cost versus how much did the a breakfast for Cobra Gold participants cost?  That equipment would be much more appreciated in Appalachia.

Good grief! Go wash your mouth out......????

US AID is really such a dubious cover.

I hope  the US paid the proper import taxes.

Its not as if Thailand is still a Third World Country.

Thailand is the 21 st biggest Economy in the World  ( I think if memory serves ), so why are they not paying for this stuff themselves.

Deputy Ministers and their friends just need to be kept away from this stuff, so it goes where its intended to be used.

It's intended for the minister's and if not, they will soon make sure it is.

This must be comedy hour. It's the US that needs the help.

A question for Chan-o-cha: is LOS a developing country?

So Thailand can see the quality of US health products, then later they can buy some.
