With the Covid-19 scare halving passenger numbers, State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is suspending train services on 22 routes from Wednesday (April 1) “until the situation improves”.

SRT acting governor Warawut Mala said on Friday passenger volume dropped by 50 per cent from February to March, with thousands of ticket reservations cancelled after the government postponed Songkran festivities.

Demand for refunds had “affected SRT’s revenue considerably”, he said.

The routes to be suspended link Bangkok to the North, Northeast and South:

• Train 3/4 Bangkok-Sawankhalok, train 13/14 Bangkok-Chiang Mai, train 105/106 Bangkok-Sila At

• Train 23/24 Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani, train 25/26 Bangkok-Nong Khai, train 136 Ubon Ratchathani-Bangkok, train 145 Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani

• Train 31/32 Bangkok-Hat Yai, train 39 Bangkok-Surat Thani, train 44 Surat Thani-Bangkok, train 41/42 Bangkok-Yala, train 83/84 Bangkok-Trang, train 173/174 Bangkok-Nakhon Si Thammarat

Could be wrong, but wouldn't it be easier to keep social distancing at appropriate levels if the trains are only half full?   Cancelling these services seems to ensure that people are crammed together.
