North still in the clutches of air pollution

The level of PM2.5 dust particles in the north remains hazardous due to a wildfire that is still spreading.

 

Natural Resources and Environment Ministry permanent secretary Jatuporn Buruspat said the record showed the range of dust particles was 47 – 257 microgrammes per cubic metre.

 

Firefighters were sent to control the fire spreading across Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phayao and Mae Hong Son, which are the most affected provinces.

 

The Pollution Control Department is cooperating with the Asean secretariat on the issue and held discussions with representatives from Myanmar to create measures dealing with pollution across borders.

 

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the arrest of people who violate the law by lighting fires in forests – the main cause of pollution in the region.

 

Government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat that wind currents were another reason for PM2.5 dust particles still covering the northern region.

Burning here in Kanchanaburi like crazy and its just idiots butning with no reason anymore. I had to take my tractor out at midnight with big water tank on the back and put the fires out. I had 5 shots fired above my head for doing so. Locals dont care and seem to be on permanent holidays. Police seem to be protecting this brain dead pyro activity. Its a disgrace!! Been on avergae pm2.5 for the past 48hours at my house.

Arent thais embarassed of these idiots? A barbarically low iq and pyro behavior goes hand in hand.

It seems to me that a big part of the problem is that no matter how well Thailand does in controlling these fires, there are even more in the three neighboring countries as well as southern China and this all blows through Thailand. I don't have the link handy. But, in the past when I've seen maps of current fires, it seems that there are fewer such fires in Thailand compared to neighboring areas. It's bad in central Thailand too. Wish I could get down to the south now for a bit of a break. Hopefully in May or June.

That's a very brave and noble action unamazedloso. Being fired upon is extraordinary and just shows how entrenched these burning practices are and that the farmers regard it as their right. In turn, the local authorities do nothing to stop it, thus reinforcing the view that it is fine to continue burning.

 

The forest burning this year all over the north is the same. Rampant burning, no enforcement. just empty words from Bangkok.

 

Take care please. Noble as your actions are, it isn't your job to enforce 'the law' and the police are clearly not going to help you.

Nation journalists, do your bloody job please. Did you bother to ask the 'Pollution Control Dept' spokesperson what exactly this cooperation entails, when these discussions were begun and most importantly what these measures dealing with pollution are going to entail? And why only Myanmar? Are any other countries cooperating? Why not?

Again Nation journalists, have you bothered to explore this bland statement further? WHEN was this arrest order issued? Just yesterday? If earlier, then exactly how many arsonists have been arrested so far and what has been their punishment? Who is enforcing the law - army, police or local officials? Details, details DETAILS please.

A few months ago I was thinking about getting a place in CM.

The air in CM has been a disgrace every day for a month, nothing changes. We dont wear masks here for Covid-19 but for the high PM 2.5 exposure.

The quality of air in Chiang Mai is just terrible can’t they stop these damn burning TIT

The same here in Chiang Rai. We haven’t seen a blue sky the last six weeks while we know it must be there, somewhere above this filthy blanket of smoke.

Good summing up of what is happening.

We live 35kms north of Kanchanaburi and have noticed the air has got noticeably worse again recently.

As you say, anyone with the power to do something about what us happening seems not to give a <deleted>.

Invite Greta sending her first class ticket and room in five star hotel. She will fix the problem.

Wildfire? ???? Worst air pollution on the planet for months on end and now they are blaming it on wildfires.???? Last month it was Burma, before that Cambodia, construction sites, ten wheel trucks on outer ring road. etc. etc. etc. ????

Nice one,looks like the fields out the back of my house,but as it got out of control here there is no brown anywhere,the guy burned everyones paddocks ,tree's went up,a rest hut burnt down,eventually my neighbour called the fire brigade,the farmer had gone off to lunch not a care in the world.

If it was desired that it stop then it would, things can happen quickly when the will is there. That is doesn't probably means money interests are involved. Someone with influence is saying leave it be. Ecology is not even a consideration. How can you order lockdown and travel restrictions and make half the country jobless and let them continue to burn Thailand???
