China Objects To Chiangmai Proposal For Lanna Script

Chiangmai-based Martin Hosken has been pushing for the encoding in Unicode of the Lanna script, the script traditionally used to write Northern Thai, Tai Khuen, Tai Lü and, to some extent Lao, and the traditional script in an even wider region for writing Pali. The latest proposal has broad British, Irish and American support.

China has now made its own counter-proposal, proposing to extend the encoding of New Tai Lue, which unfortunately has technical incompatibilities with the Lanna script.

Anyone wishing to follow the argument can do so by consulting the ISO working group's document register.

(I wasn't sure whether to post this under Thai language, News or Computer Technology in Thailand.)
