Saudi Arabia to end flogging as form of punishment - document

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia is ending flogging as a form of punishment, according to a document from the kingdom's top court seen by Reuters on Friday.

The decision by the General Commission for the Supreme Court, taken sometime this month, will see the punishment replaced by prison sentences or fines, or a mixture of both.

"The decision is an extension of the human rights reforms introduced under the direction of King Salman and the direct supervision of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman," the document said.

Flogging has been applied to punish a variety of crimes in Saudi Arabia. Without a codified system of law to go with the texts making up sharia, or Islamic law, individual judges have the latitude to interpret religious texts and come up with their own sentences.

Rights groups have documented past cases in which Saudi judges have sentenced criminals to flogging for a range of offences, including public intoxication and harassment.

"This reform is a momentous step forward in Saudi Arabia's human rights agenda, and merely one of many recent reforms in the Kingdom," the president of the state-backed Human Rights Commission (HRC) Awwad Alawwad told Reuters.

Other forms of corporal punishment, such as amputation for theft or beheading for murder and terrorism offences, have not yet been outlawed.

"This is a welcome change but it should have happened years ago," said Adam Coogle, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Division at Human Rights Watch. "There's nothing now standing in the way of Saudi Arabia reforming its unfair judicial system."

A step forward though a great deal of further reform is required. Still huge human rights abuses by Western standards in KSA. An example from 2018...

Then they would have to redesign their flag...

Now all we have to do is stop flogging oil.

At the speed these morons go, they will be allowed to talk about Human Rights in 500 years ... maybe even more.

Glad to see they're maintaining some semblance of their local common sense... It wouldn't be Saudi Arabia unless they kept their local (barbaric) customs!

Bloody great,i had a consignment of 500 cat 'o' nines ready to go,i have made in my workshop during lockdown, what the hell do i do now- Brunei maybe?

so do floggers become re-trained and start swinging the sword

Sounds good... Any progress is a good progress.

What can one even say? If it were not for their oil, they would just be a backwater, that nobody thought of. They would have no influence, and would still be medieval. Wahhabism is one of the darkest sects of Islam, and the Saudis continue to be a menace to the civilized world. MBS is a serial killing thug, and he is embraced by guys like Trump, because the lobbyists forbid him to behave any differently.

The planet is rejoicing over the fall of big oil, and though some jobs are lost, it is a drop into the proverbial Covid-19 bucket. Watching the Saudis and the Russians squirm, is nearly a sport. Big, big fun to be had by all.

While Saudi Arabia has made tremendous and progressive strides towards the 14th century….they are still quite fond of traditional blood sports. Beheading, amputation, and crucifixion for those found guilty of outrageous offenses like Apostasy, Homosexuality, Blasphemy, Witchcraft, and Sorcery still remain wildly popular. With all that other exciting Islamic entertainment on offer...they won't miss flogging one bit.

Welcome to the 1700s Saudi. Pathetic place.  I wouldn't set foot in that country for a  Kings ransom.

When will these tin pot autocracies stop living in medieval times?  Be awesome when eventually oil becomes less relevant and these despot rat holes in the Middle East are consigned to the irrelevance they deserve.   Seems a more likely long term scenario thanever getting rational thinking leadership.

Welcome to the 21st Century--from the 16th Century.

40 lashes outlawed, but chop off left hand for stealing.

So what are we supposed to watch on Flogging Saturdays now???

Why? What's wrong with a good flogging if they Deserve it?

Must keep the Other forms of corporal punishment ,amputation for theft or beheading for murder and terrorism offences. If not  Jail time does Nothing ,but amputation stays with one the rest of one's Life.

Beheading is Fine ,No different than the Chair /Needle. One's your Dead your Dead and Stay Dead

too little, too late.

Hey does that include women?
