Sending Ashes from Thailand to Australia

Featured Replies

A friend died recently and was cremated, his Aussie family have asked for some of his ashes to be repatriated to them. Anybody done this? His Thai wife has tried DHL but they say no. Thai Post website is drawing a blank.

In the current climate its almost impossible with the usual mail services to Australia all but stopped.

There was even a recent report of no surface mail to Australia either.

I would try more investigations in couriers, but it will be costly at this current time.

Might have to wait until August.

I have some experience with this albeit the other way around (USA to Thailand) and quite a while ago. I am pretty sure you will find that no couriers will accept cremated remains. I'm not sure what the reason for that is.

As far as I know even in normal times, EMS is the only realistic option. I'm not sure if outbound EMS from Thailand is operational now though. It is run quite separately from normal postal services so it might well be.

I do not know about courrier service but in a few case I was involved I it was only possible to carry the urn with ash by plane as carry-on with a passenger.

You need only an urn that can be scanned ( cardboard or plastic and the proper documents,)  death certificate and cremation documents.

Can not use cargo.

Yes you can take in your personal luggage. All you need is a letter from your embassy  in Thailand and of course copy of death certificate. I done thi 4 months ago

The crematorium have an international form they type out. (Yes, even in Thailand) The deceased's Embassy will notarize for you & someone can put in their check in luggage, not hand luggage

Many years ago, I was part of the EMS mail inspection program, then at Sydney airport. I personally have inspected several shipments of cremated remains. It should still be possible to send by EMS when the current restrictions are eased. Suggest you check out the Australian Dept of Agriculture website. There should be links there to facilitate Bio-security clearance. There is a certain amount of paperwork necessary, patience is essential at this time, my condolences to the family of the deceased.

Removed a troll post.

Dang, thought this was going to be a cricket related post.   Best of luck all the same.
