How to manage my first one year retirement visa?

Featured Replies

We've had a home in Thailand for 15 years but never spent more than 90 days here.  The new visa rules meant we could no longer get the multiple entry visa with 90 days allowance we are used to but needed to get an annual retirement visa - all done.  With the changes in the world we are planning to stay here six months for the first time without leaving.  I know I have to report to immigration every 90 days but I believe before leaving the country I need to get a re-entry permit.  Question how long in advance (flight is booked) can I get this permission - i.e. we are reporting for the first time in June for 90 days - can I apply for the re-entry permit at the same time for leaving in September?    Also the visa lapses in January.  I believe we can only extend in Thailand not the UK - is this correct?  If we are still in the UK will we need to jump through the same hoops again?  Thanks so much in anticipation and also any other advice for managing this visa would be appreciated.

The re-entry permit is for when you're on an extension of stay rather than for your initial visa.

Many people (myself included) find it easier to get the re-entry permit from the airport on the way out, saves a wasted trip to the local office and it's quick and hassle-free.

One thing to remember is to show the re-entry permit to the immigration officer when coming back into Thailand - use the permit number in the space for "visa number" on your arrival cards.

You can apply for your re-entry permit at any time since it will be valid for entry up to the day your extension of stay ends.

You can get a single (1000 baht) or a multiple (3800 baht).

Ah thank you.  Much simpler than I thought.  Overthinking.
