I would like to know how many remaining months I need on my work permit (managing director) to get a 1-year multi-entry B visa in Penang.

The most recent reports I can recall they were wanting at least 8 months remaining on the work permit.

Of course it may be a couple of months before you apply now due to travel restrictions.

My wp expires on the 14th of June, so I need to renew it by then and hope that I will be able to go to Penang within 4 months. 

I seem to recall that Penang stopped issuing multiple entry Non B visas except to foreign directors of Thai companies, and no longer issues them just on the strength of a work permit. Is my recollection faulty?
