Thai market stall owners told to waive rent for Cambodian vendors

Featured Replies

Thai authorities have told owners of stalls in Sa Kaeo province’s Ban Khlong Luk village to waive rentals of Cambodian vendors in Rong Kluea market who are unable to resume operations following the closure of the border due to COVID-19 fears. The move is to alleviate financial woes faced by the vendors who cannot cross the border to resume business.

Banteay Meanchey provincial governor Oum Reatrey said yesterday the Thais have also assured vendors that the market is under close guard to protect goods left behind. Speaking at a press conference at the Council of Ministers, he said following the closure of the border, Cambodian vendors have voiced concern over the safety of their belongings left behind in the market’s stalls.

“Recently, an association requested to be allowed to stage a protest to demand that Thailand reopens the border and allows Cambodian vendors to cross and check on their stalls and goods left behind,” Mr Reatrey said. “However, the Thai authorities are refusing to allow any border crossings to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “The Thais have said that the vendors need not worry because guards have been placed in the market to make sure their goods are not looted or stolen,” he added.

"..alleviate financial woes faced by the vendors..."

And pass those "financial woes" onto owners, who may have taken out loans to buy those stalls, depending on stalls for income.

How about a government bailout on the rents? Put money where your mouth is.

Two very low Covid19 countries, why not just open the bloody land border?

Euro zone has opened land borders already with far more cases to worry about.

Also, the local governor in  Banteay Meanchey has been complaining about why Thai trucks are getting relatively free access to transport goods into Cambodia but are not getting those benefits reciprocated for the Cambodian people in the other direction.

Thai fairness at its usual best.
