Phnom Penh Municipal Court today began the trial  of a Cambodian-American man accused of cheating three men out of nearly $30,000 after posing as an United States Embassy official. Presiding Judge Koy Sao identified the accused as Andy Anthony Suphaphon, 43, from the United States.

He said Mr Suphaphon was charged with “fraud” and also with “forging a public document” under Articles 377 and 378. Judge Sao said that in 2014, the accused posed as an official working with the US Embassy based in Phnom Penh and took a total of $8,150 from Mom Sovannara and Sok Vandy as service fees to help them apply for visas to travel to visit their relatives in the United States.

“But after he received the money from the two victims, he forged the visas by taking expired ones from other people’s passports and changed the names and dates,” he said. “The victims knew that the visas were fake when they were stopped by immigration police at the Phnom Penh International Airport on the day they were flying to the United States. Judge Sao said the two victims tried to locate and contact Suphaphon to refund their money but he went missing.
