As animal attractions around the country prepare to reopen under the next phase of lockdown easing, Chiang Mai Zoo has launched five measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Chiang Mai deputy governor Ratthaphol Naradisorn visited the zoo on Wednesday (June 10) to inspect the new safety measures ahead of a pending announcement on zoos’ reopening.

“We expect that this Friday (June 12), Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa will hold a press conference regarding progress on reopening of zoos nationwide after they were ordered shut for more than two months to curb the outbreak,” he said.

The “new normal” conditions at the zoo will be governed by five measures:

1. Screening checkpoints equipped with thermal scanners have been set up at all entrances.

2. The number of visitors will be limited to 2,000 per day and social distancing practices will cover all areas of the zoo.

3. Public surfaces will be disinfected every hour, and alcohol gel dispensers provided in crowded spots.

4. Cashless payment system will be in use at restaurants and souvenir shops.

5. Animal shows and the feeding of animals by visitors will be cancelled to ensure the safety of both visitors and animals.

Located in Meuang district, Chiang Mai Zoo is a popular attraction in the province, with highlights including daily bird shows and the giant panda exhibition. The zoo shut its doors in March to comply with lockdown restrictions.
