Anti-Corruption Organisation disagrees with Justice Ministry appointment of adviser who served jail term

The Anti-Corruption Organisation of Thailand expressed disagreement over the appointment of former transport permanent secretary Supoj Saplom as an adviser to the Justice Ministry after he was jailed by a court and released from prison last year.

 

The organisation filed a letter yesterday (June 21) with Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, saying society expected the ministry to be a role model of justice and any person appointed as a member of the ministry should not have a tainted record.

 

The letter also said the organisation found it unacceptable that the justice minister had reportedly invited a person imprisoned for corruption to be a member of a sub-committee tasked with studying an industrial estate for development and rehabilitation of inmates.

 

Supoj, who has been reportedly tasked with drawing up guidelines for the industrial estate’s management, was found guilty of filing false asset declarations for Volkswagen Caravelle and served 10 months in prison.

Seriously went to jail based on that? Well if a heroin dealer can be in government, and a PM who did not properly take the oath, and a political party that really didn't win the election, then why not have the least of the evil having this guy on the Anti Corruption Organization. Who else would be a more better candidate than someone who is closely familiar with corruption and lying. 

What a better way for rehabilitation and to refill his pockets by finding corruption and giving 90 percent to the Government and then keeping the other 10% for himself.  Robin Hood of the Anti Corruption Department, next he will get a job with AMLO and launder it legally.  What a bunch of tools these people are.  Maybe the new Amnesty they are taking about will be so the minister who was imprisoned in Australia for Drug Smuggling can keep his job....just saying

Well, he needs to recover that 200 million baht that he had set aside for his daughters wedding. Remember? Someone nicked it. ????

Well, I'd content that to a larger or lesser extent they basically are all criminals-in-disguise and probably see nothing wrong at all with welcoming a former jailbird into their illustrious ranks. He fits right in. At least he hadn't been convicted for smuggling hard drugs like another member of that tightly-knit, exclusive club we jokingly refer to as "the government".

I think most people would agree he should go to jail. Its more that many people doing far worse things never get punished. Especially if they are connected. 

There's a lot more to that story, and he probably should have been inside for a lot longer.

 

A quick Google of his name, Supoj Saplom, will throw up all the information you need on this guy.

It was far worse than just false asset declarations, although that is all he was charged with in the end.

 

The robbery story hinted at by another poster is the key to understanding the events.

The punishment for politicians' being found guilty of disguising their assets is prison so why do you think this politician, who did exactly that, should be exempt?  Presumably, if you think this one deserves exemption you'd extend the same consideration to all asset-hiding politicians?

I wouldn't imagine he is any better at corruption and lying! he got caught and the rest of them have managed to lie, strongarm or wriggle out of any questions and avoid any culpability!!!

 

If lying and corruption was an Olympic sport the present lot would be multiple world champions they really are that good and have been trained since before they could walk...!

 

Nepotism, cronyism, racism, corruption they got it all in abundance. Intelligence not so much......

No he had billions of baht in notes in his house when he was robbed....some of the thieves were caught....they said there was so much money they could carry it all away...18 million baht was recovered. He was asked how he could have such a huge compound in Bangkok and so many cars on 30,000 baht a month salary. He said he acted as an architect part-time after hours at the ministry. He got a piece of every road construction project in the country for about 20 years. 

I just had a quick look at ACT's organizational chart and couldn't find a single General... Surely, that's a disqualifier.

Fits in perfectly with the likes of Thammanat Prompao. 

A convicted heroin dealer is a minister in the government and yet this is a problem they care about. 

Former permanent secretary for transport Supoj Saplom has been sentenced to 10 months in jail for failing to declare assets in a high-profile case that came to light after a burglary that took place at his house.

Supoj: Prison term not suspended

Supoj was sentenced yesterday by the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions, which has jurisdiction in cases involving assets declarations by both political officeholders and government officials. The prison term was not suspended.

Supoj, 64, was the permanent secretary for transport from 2009 to 2011.

The court found him guilty of intentionally failing to declare 17.55 million baht in cash and a Volkswagen Caravelle van worth about 3 million baht in five asset declarations while permanent secretary and director of transport state enterprises.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) investigated his wealth after burglars broke into Supoj's house in Wang Thong Lang district on the night of Nov 12, 2011, while he was at his daughter's wedding reception.

The commission filed the case against Supoj with the court after finding he was unusually rich.

Supoj told police the burglars stole 5 million baht in cash, but police later seized 18 million baht in cash and 10 baht-weight in gold from the suspects they arrested. The NACC also asked the court to order the confiscation of Supoj's assets.

The Civil Court ruled in January, 2014, that 46.14 million baht in assets should be seized from Supoj and his family for being unusually wealthy.

The Appeal Court on Nov 11, 2015, upheld the lower court's seizure order and then raised the amount to be confiscated by another 18 million.

The wealth comprises 17.5 million baht in cash, 10 baht weight of gold worth about 260,000 baht, the Volkswagen Caravelle van worth about 3 million baht, Mercedes Benz sedans series E 230 and C 220 worth a total of 5.2 million baht, along with bank deposits, land and houses worth about 44.1 million baht.
