Thailand’s PM defends further extension of national state of emergency

Prayut-fight-COVID19.jpg

Thailand’s Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, defended Monday’s decision to extend the national state of emergency until end of July, noting that there is still a high risk of a second wave of COVID-19 infections, as the country enters the 5th phase of lockdown relaxation.

While emphasizing the need for everyone to continue to observe basic anti-COVID-19 safety guidelines, the Prime Minister attributed Thailand’s success in containing the pandemic to good cooperation from the public and the emergency decree which, he said, has enabled the Government to take immediate steps to stem the spread of the virus, including the closure of the country’s borders, and of business and leisure activities in the initial stage of the outbreak.

He stressed the need for pro-active measures to prevent the spread of the disease, especially regarding retail businesses and tourism, while he expressed his sympathy for the poor, who have been particularly badly affected by the lockdown measures.

He also dismissed, as irrelevant, criticism that the state of emergency has violated the freedom and liberties of the people.

Meanwhile, CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin said today that the CCSA has agreed to allow pubs, bars, karaoke bars, massage parlors, internet and game cafés and tea houses to resume businesses, but under certain conditions.

Bars, pubs and karaoke bars can operate up to midnight, but they must observe social distancing, with each table separated by at least two metres, each chair by one metre and each group must not exceed five people.

Convenience stores can operate around the clock, but shopping and community malls can operate up to 10pm.

Age and time limits are applied in internet and game cafés.  These venues are open to youth under 15 from 2pm to 8pm on weekdays and 10am to 8pm on weekends.  For those between 15 and 18 years old, they are open from 2pm to 10pm on weekends and 10am to 10pm on weekends.  No time limits for people over 18 years of age.

Sympathy isn't good enough.

And with the restrictive measures in place for a lot of businesses to open (many won't re-open), and the largest unemployment figures in decades, the number of poor people in Thailand will increase incredibly.

But do the government or the elite care ? I don't think so.

With no foreign tourists to bolster the saturated bar/entertainment market many are in trouble anyway.

For you poor folks suffering under my equally poor leadership as your prime minister,  here's a big tasty dish of sympathy I cooked up myself to fill your empty bellies.  Enjoy!

You must be heavily invested in the Government schemes and have nothing to loose obviously as the Baht is streaking upwards again amidst a global recession and highest unemployment rates never seen before.  Enjoy you ride...

You can't defend the indefensible, Prayut. There is no second wave.

It is just your excuse to keep the state of emergency in place.

You and your government are a national embarrassment.

Yes All counts are fake. But his stepped up his assault with setting up liked opposition before elections. This guy is the worst ever in the country's history.

nonsense,Thailand has faired very well in the fight against COVID-19 transmission and infection rates. Measures put in place early by Khun Prayut Chan O Cha were necessary to ensure effective risk management as has been proven so just keep blowing your trumpet ... but kindly in your own kitchen ... lol

Most Thais are a "show me kind of people". That is why these words are utterly meaningless, especially coming from people like Prayuth and Taweesin. If you guys were sincere, you would have offered to sacrifice all of your salaries the entire time this nation was shut down, and donate that money to the poor. Also, you would have offered enough assistance to people out of work, instead of the paltry program you offered, with an 83% rejection rate. A 5,000 baht handout is already inadequate. But, then you have the audacity to reject nearly everyone who applied? Is that what you clowns label as sincerity?

Would point out with no new cases for 30+ days, the only measure required is to keep the borders closed.

Life in Thailand could continue as normal with no risk of anyone being infected.

What a joker he is. This man would not notice a poor person if he stepped on him crossing the road.

My post said that Thai domestic tourism was not enough to keep all the bars etc open & making a profit, some will go broke.
International tourism is a long way off yet, open that up & the second wave will surely follow.

That's just common sense.

Just keeping the lid on the brewing unrest a little longer ????
