Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday allowed entertainment clubs and karaoke outlets across the country to be converted into restaurants after the temporary shutdown since March to stem the spread of COVID-19. During a meeting at the Council Ministers Office, Mr Hun Sen said: “Entertainment places and KTV clubs in Phnom Penh and provinces are allowed to become restaurants to participate in economic activity and improve the employment rate.”

“But they must adhere to safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” he added. According to a directive on the Granting of Tourism Licences to Restuarants and Food Stores signed by Minister of Tourism Thong Khon in 2008, a restaurant is a limited food and beverage business.

Examples of restaurants are noodle and rice shops and cafes. The outlets must have certification from relevant ministries including a cleanliness certificate issued by the Ministry of Health. Mr Hun Sen in mid-May gave the green light for local authorities to conduct hygiene checks on restaurants in the Kingdom which were allowed to reopen following a temporary closure to stem the virus spread.
