Officials working for removal of ban on Thai coconut milk in Europe

The Office of Agricultural Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce have been tasked with convincing Europe to remove the ban on Thai coconut milk in European supermarkets due to PETA’s claim that Thailand was committing animal abuse to make coconut products.

Alongkorn Ponlaboot, adviser to the Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister, said it was important to acknowledge the agricultural tradition and show that animal protection laws in the country, such as the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animals Act, BE 2557 (2014), exist.

He said PETA might have a misconception about Thai farmers mistreating the animals. On the contrary, Thai farmers are now applying science to shrink the size of coconut trees to 12 metres and are using technology to pick up coconuts.

Monkeys are used for coconut-picking by a small group of farmers from the older generation.

“I hope they will understand the differences in each culture as English people also use horses for labour,” the adviser said.

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit confirmed that nowadays monkeys are not used on an industrial scale and he would invite the coconut manufacturers to represent the right image to the delegation from the countries that still have doubts.

Horses used for labour in the UK? What cultural trickery is this. Are they talking about horses used by the Police force or The Household Cavalry? The Thai police also have horse regiments.

When they come out with stuff like this, you realise how childish, arrogant and uneducated they actually are.

Maybe they want Europe to ban the import of rice as well as some farmers still use buffaloes. Many bar girls ask for money to help for the sick buffaloes owned by their poor fathers.

Yes, he hopes that saying something is your culture is a valid excuse for doing wrong.

Your bull*$#& words and smile doesn't cut it in the west like it does in Thailand.

Well labour's full of lefty nutters anyway so a couple of Dobbins in the mix will probably complete the lunacy ..

Won't that shrink the coconuts too?

So how are they gonna convince them to change now after they blantanly lied to them saying that monkeys was only used to show off for tourists?  Anyone having experience in farming here knows that farmers sell some or the majority of their harvests to the processing plants either directly or trough a middle hand.  Not all of the stuff comes from the corporations large fields,  a big part of it is also bought cheap from local farmers.

If we know about this, then others countries goverments also know about it.

It's been constant flipflopping since this started.

Any sane person would take that as a sign of them being untrustworthy and that they are ready to say anything/lie to get you to contineu to buy their products.

It is true that it is a cultural thing, diffrent cultures use diffrent animals for food and farming.  And if there is no abuse worse than in European countries or the animals are in danger of extinction then European countries are hypocrites to wine about this.

However Thailand's representative's response to this have been very foolish and they only make things worse for themselves.

The only way they will be able to reverse this situation is if they cut the price in half or something.

Look on the bright side.

Cover them with the evil cling-film They can start selling shrink-wrapped coconuts. Marketing genius!

I'm surprised that Thailand has not used the excuse.:

"If we ban monkeys, we will have to use poor Burmese immigrants instead."

This issue has arisen as a result of PETA activism, in no small part highlighted by the "outspoken", soon to be, Mrs Johnson.

Thailand has "noted" PETAs attitude to the use of horses:

Would be most entertaining to hear the lady "noisily" argue against horse riding in the UK.

Even more entertaining to see Mr Johnsons face as she did so.

That was what Yinn said on another coconut topic she pretty much stated there would be lots of poor Burmese getting injured from falling out of coconut tree's!!

Problem is she wasn't joking and with the usual simplicity of thought can't see the irony of what she is saying....

Only if they get cold.

Thailand needs to promote organic, monkey-free coconuts and charge higher prices.

They can definitely not deal with criticism.

Inland they have the Defamation Laws, the Computer Crime Act and the Lèse-Majesté Law to silence critical voices.
But they don’t work on a global scale.

The Thai also use elephants for ceremonies, that will be next after the monkeys...
