xenoglossophobia paranoia

I usually start with - do you speak english & go from there.....Most often somebody nearby is found that does and can answer or translate.....Next in line is Google Translate.....

If it's really important I'll have my wife or one of my daughters come along with me.....

I find the Thais that cannot speak english go out off their way to accommodate me......To be in a foreign land & expect sales clerks that deal with Thais (199 to 1 english) & to expect them (basically in any country) & expect english is unrealistic....

Unfortunately, to my deficit, learning a foreign language has always been a gift I don't possess.....In reality, if Thais are trying their best to speak english for my benefit it's because of my lack - not theirs....

Of course I asked her if she speaks English. She said "a little". By "a little" I did not realise she meant "none at all".

She did actually call over some other woman, who spoke even less than "none at all".

To expect sales clerk in a massive mall in Chiang Mai, which is GEARED towards foreigners, has mostly foreign stores and many, many foreign clients to speak English is not "unrealistic".

This is 2020, shop assistants in such international venues should speak English. I was not in some Isaan 711.

The shop in Thailand. Official language is Thai.

Yet the focus is mainly Chinese and Westerners, other countries then speak English too. The point is more that it is quite tragic to see masses fail learning basic English after 14 years education. Nobody needs to speak native, it is just about simple things. As well you expect someone to know their products.

Sorry, too much logical reasoning.

It's true!

Only the other day I was trying to buy a pair of Raybans in a Central.

I asked the shop assistant "Can these frames take graded glasses? A very simple question.

You'd think I was asking a summary of the Upanishads. The girl started babbling in some incoherent way, whatever it was it was not English.

I just had to walk away, no point. And this happens all the time, some Thai person tries to say something in English and you can't understand a single word!

If you want to buy a pair or RB and change the lenses - That is normally no problem. But you need a place that do proper prescription  glasses - I assume you want lenses cut and inserted ?  If the RB frames have screws then very easy. If its 'pop in' type then it can be a bit harder.  If you are in Pattaya  - go to Euro Optics - The owner speaks English (she is Indo or from Philippines - I can not remember) - She can get anything fitted with Hoya or Pentax lenses. Great customer service and no hard sell.

Yes, cut, inserted, polished and served in English!

I just was told that some Rayban frames are not amenable to prescription glasses.

I'm in CM, but I know where to go now in Pattaya, thanks.

Personally, I prefer and use Rudy Project....The prescription lenses can be a snap in, set directly behind the outer lenses; or the outer lenses can be ground....

I use the snap in as I first discovered them for sports participation, (and safety - saved me a couple of times from bad hop batted baseballs), and there's about 8+ different outer lenses available for every light, clarity,  or glare condition....The shade I prefer is for downhill skiing, bicycle racing, & golf.....

Might be another possible option for you.....

Maybe.

Eg  if I with two Issan people together, for be polite, they will speak thai, not Issan.

Because I not speak Issan well, they speak thai. But if I not there, they will speak Issan.

When i with not south people, I try not use south dialect. Just for polite, consideration.

Yinn have xenoglossophobia to learn Isan language? ????

I speak English, it is not my first language.

This Forum is English, good that you come here to improve your English.

In Thailand I use both English and Thai, good more if Thai speak English.

Not only for me to understand, but also for them to 'see' the world.

I cannot think of anyone else who would get away with this nonsense.

Now even questioning TVF itself.

Seems some people are or believe they are bullet proof.

When I start play TVF I think I will partake help it a lot.

But about 10 guys eg Khun Benq speak thai AND English so well. They can translate to English better than me.

They are very clever, high knowledge.

Hmmmmmm, you are not up to speed then.

All the Asian countries (ASEAN) have signed up to use English as their communication language. I have been to the seminars...
