Thailand maintains sealed border with Cambodia, allowing only 14 Thais to return

14 Thai citizens were the latest group to return from Cambodia via Aranyapathet border crossing in the eastern province of Sa Kaeo. Pattaya mail had reported that this comes amid Thailand continuing to seal its border with Cambodia to prevent the spread of COVID-19, allowing only Thai nationals and some groups of foreigners to enter the kingdom.

The 14 Thai nationals had been verified by the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. All of the returnees had gone through health check and register their travel record before being placed under mandatory 14-day quarantine.

About 1,000 Thai nationals living in Cambodia have returned to Thailand since the outbreak began. Foreigners are also allowed to enter Thailand under phase five of reopening but they have to follow guidance and some requirements.

As I have stated elsewhere, this is great news for us in Cambodia - no potential coronavirus infected person trying to get INTO Cambodia!!!

yes - but it creates considerable hardship for the many Cambodians who rely on Thailand for medical care

And has also removed the only sources of reasonably good medical care (at any price) within Cambodia since all the Thai medical staff at Royal Hospital are gone.

The new (and still unclear/chaotic) rules for medical tourism are no help as they require arrival by air and there are no flights between Camb and Thailand

Yes indeed, but I believe land borders with Thailand have restricted "openings" for such humanitarian medical treatment and care for Cambodians that can afford it, also for essential cargo and produce (trade) deliveries between both countries.

Quote from Khmer Times 20 May 2020 - with border crossings added:-

"While Cambodia and Thailand are continuing a lockdown of their common border to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, low-level negotiations between both sides at the Oddar Meanchay international checkpoints, Phu Sing (Sisaket) to Anlong Ven and Kap Choeng (Surin) to Osmach, have yielded a compromise – The Thais will allow residents in the province needing medical attention to cross the border and seek emergency treatment in Thailand. However, the Thais have made it clear that this does not apply to patients with symptoms of COVID-19"

Unfortunately that arrangement is limited to Surin and Cambodians residing across from it.

There is a private hiospital in Surin that is very popular with Khmers and depends heavily on them for their business, likely arranged at their behest
