A female sausage seller was killed and 14 others injured after a steel structure at Lad Pla Khao market in Nakhon Pathom’s Bang Khaem subdistrict collapsed in a storm yesterday (July 28).

Meuang Nakhon Pathom Station police, who were alerted to the collapse, rushed to the scene and found that Supranee (last name withheld), aged 32, was killed while 14 merchants and customers were injured. Nine were said to be not serious. They were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Marketgoer Thawatchai Jangkhan said he was shopping when he noticed a storm with strong winds brewing. Heavy rain followed.

“After only 10 minutes of heavy wind and rain, I saw the roof sinking and many people ran out for their lives,” he said. “The area comprising fresh food stalls was hit badly, while other buildings in the market, which spans more than five rai, were unaffected.”

Local officials are evaluating the damage and providing assistance to those affected.

Here has no building inspector's only some village "do your self man" come say its nice and fine!

Looks as though the 3 micron rust preventative paint wore off and then rust set in......similar sights all over Thailand with the massive billboards....rust

Cheap extensions, cheap labor making them, no inspection or certification of structural standards....

This is tragic, a poor lady and those injured were just trying to make a living. I’m surprised we do not see more of this.

Those owning the building are surely accountable for this.

It seems the business owners always get away with their short cuts, be it road haulage / lorries with poor maintenance, shoddy electrical work in buildings / guest houses etc or weak structures.

Wash, rinse, repeat, innocents die, wash rinse, repeat....

Just a huge structure held up with flimsy supports and flat panels riveted to it... what could possibly go wrong.

This is a few kilometres away from me, but just nearby is a similar market structure gone up in 5 minutes last year, I wonder if anyone will bother to go look at that to see if it's safe, or wait for the next storm to blow through and see if it's still standing.
