Demonstrators try to ‘scrub away’ govt’s double standards

A group of protesters calling themselves “Democracy June 24” gathered outside Government House on Thursday (July 30) to symbolically wash dishes carrying different messages.

 

 

The last dish, carrying Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s photograph, was eventually smashed to pieces when protesters were unable to scrub it clean.

 

 

The group’s leader Somyot Prueksakasemsuk said the protest was held to voice discontent with the government’s double standards, citing the case of Vorayuth Yoovidhya – a scion of one of Thailand’s wealthiest families – whose criminal charges, including reckless driving resulting in death, were dropped by the public prosecutor.

 

“Meanwhile, the government is threatening ordinary people by enforcing laws such as extending the state of emergency and ‘disappearing’ activists like Wanchalearm Satsaksit,” he said. The activist was plucked off a street in Phnom Penh in early June and has not been heard from since.

 

 

The group then submitted a letter demanding that the government introduce reforms in the country’s judiciary system. The demands are:

 

• Revive Vorayuth’s case now that new evidence, such as the presence of drugs in the suspect’s system, have come to light.

 

• Review the role played by attorneys, police officers and investigators in this case and see if they failed to perform their duties that have caused damage to the judicial process.

 

• Separate investigators from police officers, probe to find out if there has been any intervention and use proof of this as evidence in the case.

 

• Push through drafts that are still stuck in the system, such as the National Police Act, Criminal Investigation Act and Criminal Procedure Amendment Act.

 

 

“If the government continues ignoring these demands, it will lose all credibility with the people,” Somyot warned.

I would say that, what little credibility was left, has all but disappeared with the Yoovidhya case, and, as scandalous as it is, the consolation could, hopefully, be an end to this inept, shambolic, clueless, corrupt government.

They had credibility initially, but are taking the Michael. All these points are carefully displayed, but politely mean, please FO... krap. Really admire them getting out there.

Delusional denial is the government's standard.   What they do is good, and others are wrong to disagree with them, because that hurts the country.  Its only people like these who can bring Thailand out of its doldrums.   

Thailand means free people, lets hope that they can regain their freedom from the self appointed Mafia!

They can demand all they want. It  won't make any difference. HK activists demanded too and look where that got them. It's like a mouse trying to fight a tiger.

Going to be hard for the government to argue against this.. all the points are spelled out clearly.

Thais are getting tired of the double standards and the "Red Bull" case has just create the perfect storm.

The AG thought they could do this and Thais would just accept it as the way of things... well this is the new normal and the PM is going to have to deal with it... unlike all the things stated that are bogged down in the system.

It will make a huge difference, Thailand or should I say T.A.T is trying to build up a future tourism business on the back of Covid 19, the last thing they want are street protests and marches making things look sketchy.

Also investors will sit back and wait to see if the political situation looks stable or not.

Prayut & Co don't know how to deal with students, they won't hold any dialogue as that's futile, they can't get heavy handed as that will invoke riots and bad publicity.

Street protests will make absolutely no difference, as happened whenever they have been staged in the past. Even burning down shopping malls and other buildings didn't stop tourists returning within weeks. Even occupying and closing down the airport didn't stop tourists returning within weeks. Those protests also didn't prevent Thailand developing one of the strongest performing currencies in the region. Riots and bad publicity will do nothing to cause any lasting damage to the tourist or other industries.

 

Not that there are any tourists anyway, and there won't be until foreigners get back on their financial feet and feel able to travel again.

The facade of winning the election through deceit, appointing of an unelected PM, having a convicted heroin dealer in high ranking government position and toad boy not owning the watches pretty much flushed any creditability they could have had down into the septic tank. 

I hope I am wrong, however the army and the cops could be ordered to break up any future large protests.  If that happens it will polarise the Thai people into two camps.  The larger will be against this pseudo government.

Im curious, are the majority of PM Prayut's cabinet all former Thai military? Because that says a lot! Kind of a sticky wicket hey what!

I'm not saying going up against Prayut is easy or even a good idea if you value your safety.. but these students have a lifetime ahead of them and demand a future... as it stands they finish education and join the treadmill which at the moment appears to be going in reverse.

When the rule of law is flaunted by the ruling classes people start taking the law into their own hands. The ruling class are not doing themselves any favours with this, it means that if a wealthy person causes harm they may now be subjected to mob rule outside the justice system  because no one trusts the system to do it's job where wealthy people are concerned.

No lie can live forever.......it time to stand up straight and stop letting the government ride your backs. They can’t ride your back if you standing up straight. It is time to demand change.  The government is not doing anything for you now, so protect on.
