LONDON (Reuters) - Cases of type 1 diabetes among children in a small UK study almost doubled during the peak of Britain’s COVID-19 epidemic, suggesting a possible link between the two diseases that needs more investigation, scientists said on Tuesday.

While the study is based on only a handful of cases, it is the first to link COVID-19 and new-onset type 1 diabetes in children, and doctors should be on the look-out, the Imperial College London researchers said.

“Our analysis shows that during the peak of the pandemic the number of new cases of type 1 diabetes in children was unusually high in two of the hospitals (we studied) compared to previous years,” said Karen Logan, who co-led the study.

“When we investigated further, some of these children had active coronavirus or had previously been exposed to the virus.”

Logan said previous reports from China and Italy had noted that children were being diagnosed in hospitals with new-onset type 1 diabetes during the pandemic.

This study, published in the Diabetes Care journal, analysed data from 30 children in London hospitals diagnosed with new-onset type 1 diabetes during the first peak of the pandemic — around double the cases seen in this period in previous years.

Twenty-one of the children were tested for COVID-19 or had antibody tests to see whether they had been exposed to the virus — and five tested positive for novel coronavirus infection.

Type 1 diabetes causes insulin-producing cells in the pancreas to be destroyed, preventing the body from producing enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. The Imperial team said one possible explanation might be that the novel coronavirus’ spike protein might attack insulin-making cells in the pancreas.

“More research is needed to establish whether there is a definitive link, ... but in the meantime we hope clinicians will be mindful of this,” Logan said.

But it's just the flu! ????

Children are immune! ????

One day the virus will just disappear! ????

Of course more studies are required, but it would appear the effects of Covid 19 are going to be with us for generations.

30 children with 5 positive for covid 19 does not a correlation make.....

But I guess it does cause panic and sale tabloids.....

Under these circumstances it most certainly does. I remind you  that it has already been established that Covid19 is an inflammatory illness.

Do you know what else is already established? Diabetes 2 is an inflammatory disease.

Now, when we see diabetes developing in children it underlines the relationship of the implicated cytokines.

Do you know what else is already established?  Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome Temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS). The disturbing study was published a few months ago in respect to 58 children admitted to eight hospitals in England. Coronary system, particularly direct  heart muscle impact, was  identified.

In the USA, the NCAA cancelled the football season for its largest  (and most profitable) division. Do you know why? Medical exams identified heart inflammation in too many of the student athletes who had been infected with Covid19. medical specialists had warned that the athletes were at risk of harm if they played with damaged hearts.

Do not fixate on the one disease associated with the Covid19 infection: Consider the big picture, which is that this is an inflammatory illness.  As each and every month  passes, we are seeing that the infection is leaving long term damage in a large number of  patients.  This is why Covid19 is dangerous. it is not the  fatalities, but the long term physical impact that the general public still does not  comprehend.

And yet, in the USA, the President touted a drug as a cure all prevention for Covid19, despite there being no clinical evidence  to support the claim and his supporters  pushed for access to the drug.\

I know it is  frightening and difficult for some to accept, but Covid19 is a terrible infection and it can leave a significant proportion of its victims with long term complications. Denying this may make some people feel better, but it does not solve the  problem.
