He told me that he could make it into a 250cc.

40,000 baht

Yamaha R1 piston, new cylinder, lengthen the connecting rod (same stroke), re-seat the valves. That's it.

Tom said that the tranny could take it.

He also told me that some people are taking a Steed 600 piston, and could turn my 166 (your 150) into a 300cc single.

Wow What happens when you have such a large bore in relationship to the stroke?

Tom said more torque, but I read that torque increased from stroke. But what do I know?!?

My understanding (limited) is that Greater Cubic capacity increases tourque, but yes, also my understanding, is longer stroke than bore gives greater tourque than short stroke larger bore. (allows for higher revs..I think)

I know when u put on a 250cc bore up...the water ways are prone to leaking because no "meat" left for sealing the barrel to crankcase and head. How does the 300cc bore up overcome this? or is it longer stroke and new barrel to accommadate?

Will be interesting to see the answers as they come in.

Can I ask why u are changing from the Pilot Sportys??

I have a tyre replacement coming up soon....The IRC stocks will be down to safe limits. Rekin will get 7 months use out of them. One month to go.

I still think..... after about 75000 Km on the CBR150, its still the best buy currently available. But love another 20HP!!

shorter stroke allows for higher revs because it reduces the inertial force that the mass (piston) has to overcome every time it changes direction.

But anyway, it is overkill to change the stroke of your engine - are you racing? What are you trying to accomplish?

Look at the parts available on faddybike or asean moto for an idea how to reliably increase power.

A lot of younger kids use stroker pins to increase the stroke length on sonics and waves. Because it's a cheap mod and they can't afford to do it properly (cam, carb, pipe, CDI, etc) - I think...

Might there be a shop in the pattaya area that have a wheel balancing jig? I am about to mount michelins and think it would be a shame to mount but not balance. Btw would someone know the translation for wheel balance? Maybe ballant yaarng?

Lowering a CBR

Cheers for all the info.

So I'm gonna hit up my local Honda dealer (Saphan Kwai) in the next week or so. Good, competent mechanics there.

Am going to go for the carb clean, replace the 115 Jet with a 120 Jet, check the valve clearance, and I'm also going to lower it a little.

I'm thinking of about 2cm on the front, and 1 cm on the back. But I really know nothing about how much makes a difference in appearance. Is a 1 cm drop even noticeable? Or 2 cm for that matter. :) I don't want it sunk to the ground, but I definitely want it to look a bit lower, preferably with the nose dropped slightly more than the back.

Any experiences with lowering bikes and how much makes a visual difference?

Thanks again.

Does anybody have an idea as to why my chain becomes very slack within a fortnight of having it adjusted. It's a newish chain & sprockets, but will not stay adjusted.

Is the chain a genuine Honda chain? I give mine a hard life (performance wise) but regulary maintained. Lasted 17000km. Last year I did get a local somchai to put a new chain on.....cheapy job 1/4 the price of Honda, but needed tightening every week, After a month was so noisy I put on a new Honda chain again.

I very fussy about the chain on my bike. Soon after coming to Thailand a few years ago, I rented a bike (Phantom) for a Visa run. I didnt realise at the time but the chain was slack. In a corner it jumped the rear sprocket, locked the rear wheel. Lost the rear end, laid teeh bike over and I wa ssliding across the road into the path of an on coming truck. Lucky the driver was awake...he steered and avoided me.....guess I wouldnt be writing this if he had been average asleep trucky.

Chain will stretch to the point of requiring adjustment every 400 kms or less if you accelerate hard.

I personally would look for a slightly up market chain for your Honda, even bypassing the one Honda would offer you as genuine.

I generally find the Japanese chains to be of a slightly higher standard, certainly avoid the thai made ones at all cost. The cheap chains just arnt worth it.

ALSO, (Im sure others will be along shortly to disagree) but I am from the old school, if you are going to replace the chain, make sure you replace both sprockets, theres absolutely no point destroying a new good quality chain with old out of shape sprockets. :)

Go for quality it may just save your life at speed. I have just fitted a wifi rear view camera to my bike, as being a farang, the side mirrows are too small. It is a priceless item and is really worth it's weight in gold. Got it imported in three days from UK.

You want photos, email me then OK ?

atleast 1" up front to notice any difference.

For the back you can turn the dial on the shock to adjust seat height when your sitting on it.

Okay, great thanks. That's one inch right?

Will probably go for 3 cm up front and 2 at the back then. Cheers.

Chains do not "stretch", the roller pins wear.

The chain size on a CBR is overkill for the power it produces.

So you must have gotten a poor quality chain or are adjusting it improperly. How many times has this happened?

What does 'newish' mean?

Hey! Proud CBR 150 owner here. Any idea if the Honda CBR 150 can make it on a trip from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai, Bangkok, up through the Northeast, and then back to Chiang Mai (in about 2 weeks)?

If so, any tips?

Thanks - you guys rock!

Go for it. :) If your bike is in reasonable condition there should be no problems. Obviously you would do a complete maintenance check on the bike, brakes, tyres, chain, new oil, new plug etc before you take off. Maybe a 1 litre reserve can of gasolene in your kit may be a good idea although there are plenty of fill up places, just takes a little planing on where to fill up with a 200km or so range. Ive run a bit close too to walking sometimes!!

Enjoy the ride...but ....RIDE CAREFULLY. Especially in the northeast. Expect dogs, buffalo, pickup, tractors, to be coming around the next corner on your side of the road.

I have done Rayong-Khon Kaen and return in one day, Not sure exactly but about 1000km + km all up. Even now I do about 1000km every week...not much different than what you are planning.

Cruise around the 100 mark seems easy on the bike although one trip I was in a hurry and sat on 120 most of the way..

On another note.........I commute 100km round trip everyday on Sukhumvit, eastern seaboard highway.

12 months ago I occasionly saw another CBR150 then it slowly increased untill now I see at least 2 every day, sometims more. Sometimes the same bikes but mostly different ones.

But in that 12 months.....in total I have seen 2, (yes only 2 in total), Kawa 250 ninjas. 3 Kawa 650s

Its a road frequented by farangs.....where are they??? or do the sales numbers not stack up. Obviously the CBR outsells them by large numbers?

Will be interesting to see the Honda Line up at this years Bkk Motor Show......Hopefully we wont be dissapointed.

Sounds like a fun trip, and sure the bike can do it. Last year on a MHS trip, the wife and I ran into two different CBR-150 clubs from Bangkok. Take the tips others have posted seriously though and ride defensively. My closest call to date was on a deserted mountain road coming back to CM from Mae Chaem. Hadn't seen a car for 30 minutes so was relaxing and driving hard. Suddenly a pick up truck crosses the road right in front of me on a side road shielded by trees. I missed him by inches. The driver never slowed down nor looked down the main road before crossing as far as I could tell.

I bought a chain in one of the shops that sell all kinds of mods for little bikes on Chang Moi Rd. and just asked for the best one they had. At about 280 bt, from japan, can't remember the brand, and compared to over 1k for the Honda one it has done really well.

I ride from CM to lamphun daily and don't take my time about it and the chain hasnt been adjusted in the 4k kms it has been through.

If its noticeable every few hundred Kms there must be an underlying problem unless your racing.

By the way I was reading this thread for a while and had problems using another email to log in. I have found a few good places to find mods in chiang mai as well as K&N AF and order them if anybody still isnt sure where to find some things.

Does anybody know if there is a kit to do the HID mod? And where to find it. I know in BKK there is some big market for bikes that supposedly has all kinds of things for CBR150s as well. Anybody been there?

This thread was started by a BIG guy who rode Chiang Mai-Kuala Lamphur and return on a new CBR150. Piece of cake.

Hey, CB is a good guy, not a BIG guy. Well..... not bigger than most!

Thought I might share a pic or two.

This is an 03 I think. When I got it, it still had the stickers which I immediately took and now have put front bracket mirrors and fairings from a new model along with a bit of paint on the tank and rear fairings. Also put the K&N air filter in it and am waiting for my endurance carbon fiber/stainless exhaust system to come.

Has anybody got any endurance exhaust for your bike?

I do love this bike.

So my 2003 model is beginning to show a little age.

I am having to work a little harder to shift than before. especially downshifting. seems like the linkage is a bit out of line. It isn't a clutch thing, clutch is fine.

I am the original owner and the crank case has never been opened and I am wondering is there is some non invasive ways to determine my problem.

I sort of have the feeling that once it gets opened up new problems will begin to develop. I don't really trust the teenagers/20 somethings that typically are working in the bike shops.

Anyone have a recommendation for Honda service in Chiang Mai?

Canuck... My bike seems to get "clunky" shifting about once a year. I take it to the Honda shop on Huay Gaew Road just west of Nimenhemin Road (on the left and before the Chiang Mai Hill Hotel) and they adjust the clutch and the linkages to resolve it. Always feels new when they are done. Ask for the mechanic named "Paitoom" (Also goes by "Khun Dum") as he knows CBR-150s. Take a Thai speaker with you as they don't always have an English speaker there.

If you are going to have 150 worked on I never go anywhere other than a honda dealership. If you see the shop at honda satapanich near toyota and behind Siam TV near Airport Plaza you'll see the type of place that you'd like your bike worked on in. There are CBRs in all the time and there work is guaranteed.

I have see that honda on Huay Kaew Rd. it they are pretty good but its still just a small private shop, probably hard to get it guaranteed there

lol. Thanks, but I like the cbr. :D

I've been searching around for a carbon (or lookalike) piece that goes over the front of the gas tank as mine is quite scratched by now.

The only one on the net I could find is this one. And he doesn't seem to answer emails asking how much it is, or how I can buy it.

I flew up to the shops by the dealer in Saphan Kwai but they only had the fake carbon sets for all the scooters. Nothing for CBRs. :)

Anybody know of where you can pick one up, I think it would look really good.

Thanks all.

aseanmoto and faddybike are two places I have found a lot of things like that.

Make sure that you're not using html for your links...use the brackets [] or just copy and paste the link into the little dialouge box that comes up when you click on the green "+" under 'Insert Special Item'.

yep one inch....one thing though, it wont feel as stable in the rain. The stock height rake and trail, feels really stable in the rain.

I'm thinking of about 2cm on the front, and 1 cm on the back.

Went to get all that done. But....

Didn't have a bigger jet than the 115. And he was saying that that's the biggest genuine one, that bigger ones will be a copy?

Checking the valve clearance meant leaving it in for a day or two.

So just lowered the front by 3cm. Looks nice, feels more stable. Had the handle bars raised 1cm to help my wrists out. Definitely glad I did it.

And had the carb cleaned. Which definitely made a big difference. Very clean and smooth and fast the whole way up to the top speed, which I haven't had the chance to hit yet. Along sathorn today it just kept on roaring up past 110kph with plenty left (left everything else at the lights without even trying) where before it would get luggish around that speed and would seem to be topping out at around 120.

Great job done.

And all for 140b at the Honda dealership. :)

btw, will probably go to another branch and see about getting a bigger jet, next month probably.

it's called poonsub - a 40 minute taxi ride from sukhumvit skytrain station

mostly stuff for fino, mio, sonic, click

a lot of dress up parts, some engine parts...

only a little English spoken

probably hundreds of shops,,,even salvage parts and newly painted sets of bodywork.

I went there looking for Airblade and Raider parts and could not find any....

I did not see any shop specializing in CBR 150 stuff but that doesn't mean it wasn't there..I would bring a thai person with me if I went again.

so, I have never driven anything but scooters which I take around all the time, but I am interested in ownign my first bike, whether scooter or a bike like the CBR. I owned a manual car in the past, but how steep is the learning curve? Would I likely be able to drive a CBR off the lot?

I will ask in the CM forums as well, but any reliable place to buy a CBR in Chiang Mai?
