In the UK, and probably elsewhere, we have a fairy story concerning a mythical goose that produced golden eggs until, being somewhat overworked in this respect, it decided that it had had quite enough of this and departed for pastures new.

Does anyone know if there is an equivalent tale in the Thai culture? If so, where can I get hold of it in Thai script?

I feel that this tale is one which my current lady might benefit from being acquainted with!

The way I remember the tale, a greedy man wouldn't wait for the goose to lay the eggs in its own fashion, and so he killed it, thinking that he could gather up all the eggs inside at once, which - of course - was folly.

Don't know if there is a corresponding Thai tale, but the moral of the story is a very common Thai adage, known to all:

โลภมาà¸à¸¥à¸²à¸ à¸«à¸²à¸¢

I use it a lot, and often add: เหมือนทัà¸à¸©à¸´à¸“

Nearly everyone agrees.

My computer does not read the Thai quoted above. It must be some pesky font I have not yet downloaded even though I have gone through the whole process of changing the language features on XP and downloading fonts off the net. Could you please tell me which one the above font is so I can read this very interesting thread? If you can't, can someone please retype it or transliterate it. Cheers!

I might have got the original story slightly wrong, by the way, but you can probably see where I'm coming from on this one. Sometimes it all gets a bit much - 'When you buy ----- for me?' on a daily basis. I think that she's done very well out of me already! Might have to show her the door if she doesn't moderate her demands!

Thanks for the info. and I now have the correct unicode (UTF-8, thanks Meadish) to read the script. I'm struggling a bit though. My limited Thai, aided by my small dictionary, seems to indicate that the adage reads something like, "If you are too greedy then your unexpected good fortune will disappear." Yes?

I can't make anything out of your addition though, unless it's something to do with being 'Selfish'.

You're right about the meaning of โลภมากลาภหาย. The second part simply says 'like Thaksin'.

In this case, the right encoding is Unicode (UTF-8).

That is correct, doctormann. And i'm guessing it fits perfectly with what you'd like to convey to your girlfriend. It's very common, and she'd surely get it straight away.

Meadish is of course correct on the addendum, although doctormann's reading of "selfish" for Thaksin was a real sweet bit of irony. Synonymous indeed.

And, yes, I type on a Mac and use Apple's browser, so all my Thai script has to go out in Unicode UTF-8. I hope that's not too inconvenient here.

Don't know about the rest of you, but whenever I study a new language, I go right to the idioms, proverbs and adages. Every culture has similar ones, and it is great good fun to see how certain universal ideas are expressed in each. It also makes learning, and conversing with native speakers, a lot more fun. For one thing, it shows that you've taken the time to learn Thai culture, but it also helps you to understand the culture, and the ways of thinking. There are many good sources for the uncountable Thai idioms and proverbs, but a very handy one is thai-language.com The dictionary therein gives many different usages for a word, including adages, apart from straight definitions. And as for pronunciation practice - and more fun - I'd recommend collecting what we call "trabalenguas" in Spanish; I think they're called "tongue-twisters" in English. Master some of those and you'll surely impress people, and have some good laughs together. I could post a bunch of Thai favourites if anyone's interested. Cheers.

It is a nuisance. Does anyone know why the ThaiVisa server doesn't convert it from UTF-8 to numeric entities? Is it a fault in the protocol, is the server ignoring the header, or is the browser neglecting to tag the data it posts? ThaiVisa pages are encoded in Latin-1 (iso-8859-1).
