Final Day to Apply for Extension ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm on Amnesty and considering getting assistance from a visa agent to apply for a Medical or Volunteer Visa.  Although I'm not sure if they are technically visas or extensions of stay.

Can you apply for those with as little as 10 days remaining or less? What's the official cut off day?

It would be a medical extension of stay and that could be applied for up to the 25th.

The volunteer visa would be a non immigrant visa application that requires at least 15 days remaining before the 26th.

You are almost certainly too late to apply for a volunteer visa + extension. (I assume you are not already here on another kind of Non Immigrant entry.)

Most agents could probably arrange a medical extension with three days notice, or so. They are likely processing the extension through up country immigration offices, so time must be allowed for sending the passports there for processing.

Many thanks Joe & Tim.

Greatly appreciated.

I've been told it's fine to apply for a medical visa first and then volunteer visa later. Is that likely to all go smoothly?

That is probably correct if using an agent. Not sure about doing it on your own and it would depend upon the office you apply at.

Don't you have to have a medical issue and paperwork from the hospital

If you are following the rules, and doing the extension yourself, that is correct. What we are discussing (probably in violation of forum rules, but unavoidable under the prevailing circumstances) is using an agent who can circumvent the normal rules at a price. Rightly or wrongly, that is how things work in this country. If you cannot stay according to fairly inflexible rules, you can rarely expect special treatment without some monetary inducements for the officials. The officials almost always want this to be done using a trusted third party (the agent) as this protects both you and the official from potential sting operations.

Hi, were you not successful in applying at the Ubon Ratchathani IO for the regular 30-day extension of stay that your Tourist Visa entry entitled you to?
