PM Prayut: Government has no problem with holding constitutional referendum

BANGKOK(NNT) - Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, says the government doesn’t mind if it has to hold a constitutional referendum, while urging all sides to ensure the safety of people taking part in anti-government rallies.

Speaking of proposals to amend some sections of the charter relating to the Senate’s power in voting for a prime minister and orders issued by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), Gen. Prayut said the parliament is overseeing these matters, and he has no objection to them.

A committee, comprising members of the government as well as the opposition, has been set up to study the details. The government has been closely following these issues, in the hope that it will proceed smoothly.

Concerning some senators who oppose the idea of amending Section 256, paving the way for the establishment of a constitution drafting assembly, because holding a constitutional referendum would require up to 15 billion baht, the Prime Minister remarked that the government will organize the referendum if it is necessary.

At present, everyone understands that there might be some budget issues, but the government is not against the idea.

The Prime Minister added that the government together with the security sector will try to avoid confrontations during anti-government rallies, scheduled for September 19 and 20 this year, while preventing third and fourth parties from creating a situation.

The government will focus on the people’s safety and will try to run the country well, as the nation has to deal with several crises at this time. He urged protest leaders and officials from all sides to ensure the safety of their children and grandchildren, preventing them from being the tools of others.

If the rallies are sincere, he has no problem with anyone attending. The government places importance on their safety by checking for weapons and implementing measures against COVID-19.

Good comments by the PM Khun Prayut Chan O Cha. Thailand will continue to move forward with Khun Prayut in charge as COVID restrictions slowly ease.

Of course he 'doesn't mind' - why would he, he already knows the outcome.

Define sincere?

I would define it as having a gut full of unelected, dim-witted, thieving cretins wrecking your life and your childrens futures for their own greed, bet he wouldn't....

Total babbling of high class from a grown up person.

He is in a tough position.  He is not well thought of at home or abroad.  He's lucky as Thailand in only on a few news agency's radar.  Under his leadership Vietnam has flourished.  His only claim to fame is a stunning wardrobe of fancy clothes.  He did not build a middle class while in power, so Thailand is heavily reliant on for trade.

Yea, but they also don’t mind lying through their teeth to get what they want or have people stop asking questions.

Funny how in real life you get mocked for believing ordinary people who are known to lie a lot, but when you do the same with a public figure, you get called negative my many.

Feudal societies really don't have middle classes. He (or more accurately those who are behind him) are busy creating or reinforcing a feudal society.

Covid 19 has been exceptionally serendipitous for them, it has accelerated their program somewhat.

BUT if they're tools of the government, it'll be okay.

Why bother? Everybody knows the outcome already, namely the results you and your merry band of watch collectors determine.

and matching masks. How could you forget the masks?!

It's going to cost the country 10 Billion Baht to rewrite the Constitution so those responsible for it should have to pay.

Oh, Pinocchio is lying again :cheesy:

Remember the problems he had last time when they were holding a constitutional referendum, on August 7, 2016? His problems were so big, he even threatened people who opposed "his" constitution with years of jail. Still the same general, still the same constitution, but now no problems with a referendum? My ass!

As long as the referendum is 1000 years from now.
