Thai man takes matters into his own hands after police foot dragging, makes arrest himself

A Thai man got fed up waiting for the police to act so went after the man who stole his motorcycle himself.

It meant a long journey from Chonburi to Phrae in the north but he got his man in a head lock in the end.

Then he handed him over to the police in Chonburi.

Sanook went to investigate after a clip was widely viewed on Facebook.

They spoke to Nattaporn, 33, who said that the man at the center of the arrest was her husband Thongbai, 32.

On September 21st a 19 year old neighbor called Pitchaya had approached her husband at work wanting to borrow his motorcycle.

Thongbai refused but soon thereafter the bike went missing and there was only one suspect.

Thongbai went to the Chonburi cops who said bring us more evidence.

He got that in the form of CCTV but still the police wouldn't act without a warrant.

Fed up with their foot dragging he teamed up with an elder brother and his girlfriend and headed to Phrae after finding out that the suspect was probably there.

So it proved and then the suspect was taken back to Chonburi and handed over to the cops.

Commenting on the story on Sanook "Jack" said it best: "He was better than the police - it's embarrassing".

Hmmm Police wouldn't act without a brown envelope?  that's what happens right?  a friends car was stolen and she had to pay before they even begun to get interested.

Actually I have two better Jack - "disgraceful or appalling", could throw in another, "lazy", but we all know how you and others feel.

Cops here are not cops. Some years back during Songkran someone punched my 12 year old in the head and stole his mums bike as he was getting something from under the seat. With my lads face swollen badly, so assault plus theft, the cops wanted 10,000 to even begin to look for the guy. One of the few times I have ever lost the plot and told them to their faces what I thought of them.

Fair play to this guy for dealing with it himself.

If I had caught the guy who battered my kid, I don't think there would have been much left to hand over to the cops mind.

I think that the police in that area are too busy checking TripAdvisor and arresting people for reviews. ????

Far too busy to act on a petty crime allegedly proven by dodgy CCTV. And everyone knows that CCTV doesn't work here in Thailand, proven at that private party in BKK that people accused of being a police-run casino!

How very dare they!

Give him a job as a policemen and fire five of them... should balance out or better.

Job Done!

So they assaulted, detained, then kidnapped a member of the public, then forcefully transported them half way across the country.

I think I saw this Clint Eastwood movie.

Give this a job a bounty hunter working for the police he seems to have the neck to deal with lawbreakers..

Tealeaf should get a slap for wearing that shirt in public as well ..

If this story is true about police ineptness, it is another example of the corruption of a body of individuals not fit to be called police.

When I received a complaint, it was my duty to investigate and to arrest the suspect if my investigation warranted it. The police are to investigate, collect evidence, take statements, prepare a report and submit it to the prosecutors office to determine if a trial is appropriate.

Research about the Thai police reveals that supposedly it follows similar methodology, but apparrently it is broken, has been for decades, and with no reform in sight.

I could use that team to sort out a few other scumbags.

A friend of mine had his house broken into, and while there they found the keys to his SUV and took that along with the usual stuff from the house. The same day, the 'security guard' of the gated community vanished, giving the police a clue who to look for. They refused to investigate unless he paid them 100,000, and as a result he and his wife decided to leave the s***h**e that is Thailand and returned to his homeland of Australia.

Why does Thailand even have a police force? My wife's brother is a policeman and I asked her what he actually does. She had no idea.

I had a Thai employee that left my company by his own accord as I caught him sleeping on the job, stealing and constantly being late to work. A few days later he then returns in the middle of the night, parks his truck next to my office's 8 foot fence so he can climb over. He then starts taking equipment and tools from our workshop and loading them onto his Van.

All this was recorded by my night vision CCTV including his vehicle number plate and clearly identifiable face. I take the recording, his home address and mobile number to the local police.  Open and shut case right?, No, they wanted 10K to investigate even though I have done 90% of the work for them. I was infuriated and informed them that I pay enough taxes over the last 10 years, I bring you all the proof you need but you won't lift a finger unless I pay you? The lower officers were ducking their head in what I hoped was shame but with Thais, who knows?

You pay to play here no matter right or wrong. With the RTP title containing the word "Royal", Surely it should be considered Lèse-majesté. Perhaps replacing the word "Royal" with "Rip-off" would be more appropriate don't you think?

There's a case to be made that it's a reasonable way to fund a police department.

These guys pay for their positions.  They pay for each promotion.  They pay for their uniforms.  They pay for their guns.  And they make a ridiculously small salary.  I'm not even sure they have a budget to do proper investigations.

The good news is that very little public money goes to the police department.  That keeps taxes low for everyone.

The bad news is that, if you need their services, you have to pay out of pocket.  But that's incentive to protect your own stuff so you don't put a burden on society by needing the police all the time.  The further bad news is the shakedowns, but that's another thread, or rather dozens of other threads.

I'm not saying I like it that way.  But it is understandable.  If I want a fully functional police department, I need to stay someplace where there's lots of taxes to pay for it.  Or I need to be willing to pay some money when I do need their services.

He should have just paid them 10K which is the going rate to get them out of their offices.  My Thai family made a citizen's arrest on  a miscreant who hired then sold my S-i-L's vehicle.  I drove them to two police stations in an attempt to get them to act.  Guy at Dongtan asked 10K to move on it - I was in the room & wife translated for me.  No action was taken & the car owner had to continue to pay the bank loan for four more years!  The thief had done it twice before tho' the cars were recovered.

RTP are a National Disgrace.  How did they earn the R in their name?

Now that the case is solved, waiting to hear who at police will receive the due cash bonus and promotion as customary...????

Yes, quite legally as he was known to have committed an offence, then they handed him over to the police.  It's called a citizen's arrest and if the arrestee doesn't like it he can sue the person who arrested him.

Are you sure there's such a legal thing in Thailand?

Please provide the Legal Act and section number.

There's no mention of Thailand on this extensive list.
