Lt-General Santiphong Thampiya

A lecture was organised at the Army headquarters’ Kittikachorn building on Tuesday to educate new soldiers on the “correct” usage of social media.

Army spokesperson Lt-General Santiphong Thampiya said new Army chief General Narongphan Jitkaewtae’s policy is that military units be able to communicate via several channels, especially through online media to improve work and keep up to date with ongoing situations.

“Social media has a great influence on society and is part of people’s daily lives, so it is necessary to create awareness of its correct usage among military officers, especially during rescue operations and in relation to communication between commanders and their subordinates,” he said.

Of course this Army "education" of recruits on social media is simply to indoctrinate them and to use them as a tool to suppress freedom of speech.

I guess the recruits are encouraged to watch Twitter and Facebook and ordered to report any post, any poster, any friend and maybe even any relative critical of the army and the powers-that-be, or supporting the protests.

They probably start to use recruits for this now, due to the sheer amount of critical posts in social media.

It's an obvious part of Thailands way to become a Stasi-state.

In an effort to monitor the internet, the junta has created units of civil servants and police officials who screen online content. It has also emerged that the junta is planning to revive a 2010 programme in which ‘students and other young people are encouraged to join a volunteer force to monitor the internet, especially social media

I think I misread that, I thought he wanted the new recruits to

teach the older officers on how to use Social Media.

Change "educate" to "indoctrinate".

And he just missed it totally. The meaning with social media was the freedom to express yourself.

censorship freedom of speech.

Shouldn't the Thai military have their own platform for communicating with their troops?  Very odd post.

'An army clerk is calling out the Thai Army for alleged corruption, saying he was forced to withdraw money under his name which was then falsely documented as a travel expense.'

'he used the hashtags #ReformtheArmy and #Thatsnotourtax'

Perhaps he could help his superiors in their efforts to 'to improve work and keep up to date with ongoing situations.'

The young generation is unwilling to let the dinosaurs hold Thailand back.  I hope they get the support they deserve.
