THAI aiming to double non-flight revenue

Thai Airways International (THAI) wants to boost its non-flight income from 15 per cent to 50 per cent of total revenue in the next five years, THAI Catering managing director Varangkana Luerojvong told Krungthep Turakit newspaper.

Varangkana said the non-flight businesses – catering, repair and cargo services – have adjusted their strategies in order to raise revenue.

She said the catering business aims to boost its annual revenue from Bt10 billion to Bt20 billion in the next five years.

The repair and cargo businesses are thought to have set similar targets - to double their revenue from the current Bt15 billion-Bt20 billion and Bt20 billion, respectively.

Last year the airline’s catering business posted revenue of Bt8.5 billion.

THAI Catering now aims to expand its franchises for all product brands to a total 700 outlets, aiming to boost its revenue by at least Bt3.5 billion next year.

THAI entered rehabilitation restructuring under bankruptcy court supervision on September 14. The airline will submit its rehab plan for the court's consideration in the fourth quarter of this year.

Try not charging £35 per kg excess baggage and swop for a £60 per piece 23kg model offered by BA and Finnair and not block or blacklist your customers for asking questions would be a start ????

It's sad to see a once proud international icon for Thailand reduced to selling Thai coffee sinkers on the street...government, management, and union corruption karma comes home to roost.

Or to put it in other words "Thai have gone into the catering business as they can't organise flights" ....LOL

"Dough Fritters" with a cup of warm soy milk and a dipping sauce from a street cart in Chiang Rai =ThB 20.

"Dough Fritters"  and a dipping sauce from a street cart run by Thai Airways =ThB 50.

Rather sums it up really.

"Double nonflight revenue"

As for many, many years THAI has lost revenue operating as an airlines, doubling nonflight revenue means zero net income. If THAI can't succeed with its core business (recall it is still in bankruptcy), by what logic can it succeed elsewhere?

B.S. THAI is very flexible regarding weight compared to ALL other airlines I have used.

well they have to try something because running an airline wasn't really working

Let the people of THAI take over the company, in other words sell the shares to the people who work there. They are fed up with all the BS (political power games and interference as well and want to work.

But with Thai you get 30kg with your ticket whereas airlines that go by piece allow only 23kg. Also, from my personal experience Thai will usually allow the first few extra kg with no charge.

This.

It's time they faced the fact that it is all over. The boondoggle has come to an end. Last stop for the gravy train before the scrapyard.

Unfortunately, they would start moaning about actually having to do something. They are clearly not used to that, especially involving a foreigner!

They use to think they were gods, air-hostess dressed in a snappy uniform.

Take off the wings and neckerchief nothings left.

Just a trolley-dolly as we used to call them.

History has proven they are useless at running a profitable Airline so why not close it and just start a Catering Company full time ?   Still; i guess they would still struggle when all the 'Elite' hangers on demand free food instead of free seats !

haha this morning's laugh.  They are trying to emulate Singapore Airlines and use their A380s for catering, but Thai is not SA, not by a long , long way. They need to give it up and return and sell the aircraft.  It will always lose money, forever.

the catering business (THAI)

If they approach this from a percentage basis, there’s no need to increase revenue from non-flight income, they just need to make less income from flights.

No problem,  they’re world leaders at this.

Seems like THAI might become a profitable catering business with some airplanes flying as a side-business, to reduce the profit from reaching sky-high figures...????

From 10 to 20 billion Baht, well that is indeed excellent news. Just wondering who else will be enjoying "Thai Airways - smooth as Somtam" or so?

The problem is not in the revenue and aiming for 50 percent of the non-flight (i.e. cargo, to my limited understanding, is also "flight" yet listed as non-flight) is reaching for the stars.

If the revenue is not the (sole) problem, what else could it be? Well, Thai Airways to me looks like Makro or Foodland without cashier counters on the way out. Everyone who could - would help themselves and it reflects a perfect storybook example of unforeseen corruption, nepotism and inefficiency.

But anyway, happy days are here again, it's Somtam, Sticky Rice and Laokao - all the way - good on them ????

Read an interesting article on another site yesterday about Singapore's flagship carrier. They now serve lunch and dinner on grounded planes. You can pick the class you want to dine in.  Apparently it has been booked out since they started this service. Quite popular in Singapore.

I get it, they have a large kitchen to produce portions. But the quality sucks. I have a proposal: do lunches for government offices.

Sufficiency economy in action.

Are they trying to offload part of the airline debt through all these other small ventures so the airline debt doesn’t look so bad and then declare all the smaller ventures bankrupt ?
