Foreign investors ‘confused by emergency rule’

Thai Chamber of Commerce chairman Kalin Sarasin

Foreign investors need more details of what they can or cannot do in Thailand under the state of emergency imposed on Thursday, said Thai Chamber of Commerce chairman Kalin Sarasin.

He added that foreign investors had inquired whether they can go ahead with holding seminars and meetings in Thailand, after the emergency ban on gatherings was imposed on Thursday.

Chambers of commerce in the provinces had also asked him if they will be able to continue with planned activities, he said.

He added that it would take a few days to judge whether emergency rule will hit foreign-investor confidence. He believes the economy could escape damage from political turmoil if the anti-government protests end soon.

Meanwhile, Japanese faith in Thailand remains high, according to Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro) president Atsushi Taketani.

Japanese investors were still confident in Thailand and remain committed to driving its economy regardless of current political situation, he said.

The country’s core economic policies – including development of the Eastern Economic Corridor – would not be affected by escalating political protests, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand said on Thursday.

Attapon Jirawatjanya, deputy governor of the authority, predicted that ongoing anti-establishment protests would be a short-term problem.

Alas, capital is just waiting for the routine slaughter then enough bodies in the factories to ensure a profit. Let us hope the youngsters dash their hopes this time.

Wake up! It was designed to confuse you!

I think there is enough precedents in Thai recent history for everyone to understand what is happening.  Very soon it will be the Black shirts opposing the Yellow shirts opposing the Red shirts....and maybe a reappearance of the White shirts to make it an even number!  ????

Wouldn't put stock in any of the daily news about Covid and foreigners coming out of anyone who wants to shine and his picture taken for advancement of his agenda,,

i think the the PM should create a new department of information's confusion control to decimate and sift out what is BS and propaganda and what is the truth before it's put out there...

Not only investors will be confused, the whole world is confused by this governments crazy antics.

They will do anything to stop the protests, in doing so, they are making up the minds of many who were thinking of coming here to go elsewhere.

It's clear as mud. It's exactly the same as any other rule or law here - it's made up as they go along.

Why are these foreigners so obtuse!

Has this "State of Severe Emergency" been published?

How long does it run for?

Does it have to be approved by Parliament?

Does it have to be gazetted?

“The situation is definitely less than ideal for investors especially if the protests escalate,” said Mingze Wu, a currency trader at StoneX Group in Singapore. “We’ll likely see an exodus of funds from Thailand into other similar countries in the region. The baht will definitely be weaker.”

“The state of emergency will likely fuel the movement that’s already gaining momentum,” said Punchada Sirivunnabood, an associate professor of politics at Mahidol University near Bangkok. “The protesters will likely continue their movement because they’re upset that the government isn’t listening to their demand.”

Hopefully, we will see a mass exodus of foreign investors from Thailand. Money seems to be the only language this administration, and the toxic army understand.

Dream on, these protesters are going to be around for a long time to come, the more the leaders are arrested more will step into their positions.

These are the next generation who are not prepared to be be treated the same way as their parents have been forced to do.

Times are changing.

It's democracy in name only.

The reason for the " severe" state of emergency? Someone was publicly rebuked.

The great hope for expats, exporters and the tourist industry: foreign investors will cease regarding Thailand as a safe haven for their assets.  Thailand should be regarded as a risky investment for anyone.

This must be doing wonders for Thailand's image abroad...tourists and businesses must be queuing up.

The situation is rapidly becoming more dire, but the "powers that be" don't have to worry....they have already raped the economy and made their money.......if there is a revolution what is the worst that can happen?......They have to go and live abroad in absolute luxury.......sick.

Even more tourists will be queuing up for the safety of state organized expensive prison quarantine. Well done Uncle Tu.

Just a normal day in LOS land of scam.

But honestly, thats one of the reasons why we like them.

A daily, never-ending chaos across the country.

Remember one thing. You are just one of 60 odd million. Who do you think will win in the end? Annoy enough people and you soon find out who your real friends are.

They hope, unless the government talks seriously about changes or arrests everyone for street protests.

I'm fairly sure they understand the language of guns and tanks.

It's probably still safer than China, which is where a lot of the money appears to be coming from.

Although the closed borders has temporarily stopped those suitcases of cash from arriving.

And it is likely the recent moves of this desperate administration will only accelerate investment from China, and slow down investment from real democracies. This does not bode well for Thailand. I have alot of faith in the youth. I do believe they will eventually prevail. But, the recent events are not good.

Though I am not a fear monger, if I were not heavily invested here, I would be formulating an exit plan, and departing for Spain within the next 30 days.

Spain?

Not the best place to be for the moment and high taxes as well.
