the cool thing about thai2english is that you can paste thai text in the translator section and it will break it down for you. if you pass the mouse over the individual words also give you a rough definition. :o

โฉม ยง ลืม ช้อน ท้าย เรา

chŏhm yong leum chón táai rao

jeddah jo, what's the group/ name of the song?

That's from an Isan song called The Old Motorcycle. The word used for "old" is an Isan and/or Lao word, and I'm not sure how to spell it. In order to fully comprehend the line you cite here, one needs the full context. It tells a very common tale of life in today's Thailand, and I will try my basic interpretation - and invite others to correct me wherever I may be mistaken.

To wit: the girl has a boyfriend who is a teacher, and thus is very poor. No money, and he only has an old motorcycle, which often breaks down. She is frustrated, and also selfish and greedy, and wants a man with money to lavish on her. And so, she leaves the poor guy, for a cop (!), because the pig has a car and money.

The line you cite says: "The pretty girl forgets (being) behind you (on that old motorcycle)."

To break it down - I hope the text transmits in Unicode UTF-8, but just in case, I'll add an attempt at transliterating):

โฉมยง (rising-tone "chohm" + mid-tone "yong") - pretty woman

ลืม (mid-tone "leum") - to forget

ช้อน (the "chor chang" here should be a "sor soh," for the high-tone word "sawn") - one following another in succession

ท้าย (high-tone "taai") - end, back

เรา (mid-tone "rao") - you

Thus: she forgets all about riding on the back of your shitty bike, because she has gone off with a pig who has a car and money.

(No matter that he has a car and money because he is a corrupt pig. That's life: the guy with the money gets the hot girl...)

Alas, 'tis sad but true.

Gee, I'm not sure how I should take that, Khun Cali.

Anyway, a couple of things I should have mentioned, about how extremely difficult it is (for me, anyway) to translate that lyric:

It might be literally translated as: "The pretty girl forgets behind you," and as is most-often the case in Thai, you have to fill in the proper missing words to get at the true meaning. At first, I thought that it might be: "she forgets you, and leaves you behind." But that didn't seem quite right. And then I wondered, considering that "sawn" also means "to overlap," if it alluded to something like "compared to him and his fine car, you and your crummy old motorcycle are now forgotten..." Well, that is the basic idea, but it's not what that particular lyric says.

Alas, being wrong at every turn, I did what every good student should do: go seek out advice, from one far wiser than myself, to narrow it down.

But, even before getting to that point, I was totally stumped by "rao," which can also mean "I" or "we." Aaargh....

I still have no idea how to know when the word means "I" or "we" or "you."

Anybody out there have the secret key to that terrible puzzle?

OK so thanks for all the feedback and interpretation of the song.

Yes it is indeed an Isaan song called

มอเตอร์ไซด์ฮ่าง

or Motosai Hang which I guess is Lao for 'Crappy old motorbike'

I thought the song would have some Lao in it to throw me but in the context of the song if 'Chom Yong' is Lao for pretty girl then

โฉมยงลืมซ้อนท้ายเรา

Chom yong leum son taai rao.

Pretty girl who forgot about riding pillion with me. The 'rao' on the end fits in better to the tune than Chan or Phom but it is definitely 'Me' rather than 'Us' I think.

The rest of the interpretation was spot on. It's about a cop with a Toyota pickup who drives pretty girls around, and one day he rescues this poor sap from his broken down scooter and predictably the girl then falls for the copper.

Not particularly a sad indictment of life in Thailand, just a girl wanting to find a successful guy rather than a nice guy who is a bit of a loser. I am sure most blokes would like to meet a successful Thai girl who can support herself rather than a lot of the financial liabilities that are out there!

Right. I thought the singer might be a narrator, but it's a first-person lament, so "rao" is "me" in this case.

And yeah, I'd like a girl with plenty of money, but not a corrupt one.

Cheers.
