Deputy CNS Chairman deploys more officials to boost security in BKK

The Deputy Chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS), Gen. Saprang Kalayanamitr (สพรั่ง กัลยาณมิตร) deploys more authorities to provide security in Bangkok after England’s officials have found evidence indicating possible terrorism plot in Bangkok.

Gen. Saprang says Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) yesterday tightened up security measures and urged officials to put more efforts to ensure security for people.

BMA has cooperated with the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) to observe the situation closely.

England officials have found documents, containing plans to initiate crimes in Bangkok, in an apartment in England.

CNS tells city to be more security conscious

The Council for National Security (CNS) has urged the directors of 50 Bangkok districts to keep abreast of security affairs ahead of more proposed street protests. CNS deputy secretary-general Saprang Kalayanamitr said at a forum yesterday that the district chiefs and their staff need to be knowledgeable about security affairs in order to be able to handle threats.

He said security officers in Britain had searched a flat and come across a manual on terrorism in Bangkok that had been translated into Thai. He did not elaborate.

More from the Bangkok Post here.

I would imagine evidence of potential terrorist bombings would be all over the news in the UK and elsewhere.

Is it?

That would rather depend on what happened last night on Coronation Street, East Enders, Big Brother, Little Britain and whether Prince Harry went out on the p1ss.

The Thaksin clan is now based in England.

The muslims in the deep south have Thai as a second language.

Therefore if it was found in England (translated into Thai) it MUST be the muslims.

Right !

I hope you understand that we were joking...

General Saprang is an utterly lunatic person. And his comment was indeed aimed at... Thaksin. He would love us to believe that Thaksin had a terrorist booklet in his mansion in London (under his mattress) ! And probably some C4 explosives in his kitchen too.

Next he will tell us that they have found a Thaksin business card on the moon, leading to the fact that the ex PM is dealing with moonmen to overthrow the thai gvt... "Suuuuuuure".

General Saprang is a man who loves to take his tribe on "working business trip" for AOT, around Europe, for a total cost of 7 millions THB (all included).

General Saprang is the funny soldier who is... chairman of AOT (Airports of Thailand)...

General Saprang is the man who answer "I'm a hero, fxxxck you" when someone argue that a personal/business trip for AOT at such price might be a little too much....

General Saprang is a pure winner. And a real entertainer.

And then there's the Ample Dressed lawyer...

Terrorist-book remark concerns lawyer

(BangkokPost.com) - The leading lawyer for deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra demanded on Friday that military junta member Saprang Kalayanamitr explain his claim that security officers in Britain had found a manual on terrorism in Bangkok that had been translated into Thai.

Noppadol Pattama said the statement by Gen Saprang, Council for National Security deputy secretary-general, seemed to be an attempt to connect Mr Thaksin to this issue.

"Gen Saprang is an influential figure so he should be responsible for what he says," Mr Noppadol said. "He should identify who is involved in this, should have evidence to back up his claim and file charge against the person" involved.

Gen Saprang said at a forum on Thursday that British officers had searched a flat and found the terrorism manual. He did not elaborate. He did not mention Mr Thaksin by name.

Mr Noppadol said he was confident that Mr Thaksin was not behind this because Mr Thaksin "loves the country".

I agree, unless they're being held under anti-terrorism rules, whereby it becomes similar to military style interrogation.

Guys I think it sounds like some Thai General was watching the court sentencing of the Brit/Paki. people and got jittery.

What's wrong with chairman of AOT to take a business trip surveweing airports in Europe or wherever he feels he can learn something??? How many people here, on TV, cited those same airports as examples for Suvarnabhumi to follow?

How does that relate to the topic anyway?

Gen Saprang .... did not mention Mr Thaksin by name.

Where did this link to Thaksin came from???

What has he or the govt said or done that is inappropriate when a terrorist plot is discovered in a foreign country? They will probably send someone over to help with the investigation.

Nothing wrong... If it was legitimate. We all know that this trip was more a vacations, paid on AOT funds. General Saprang is chairman, a position given to him by the CNS after the Coup. He's not a manager, nor a technician, able to assess whatever problems (security or other) related to an international airport...

I just wanted to highlight a bit the personality of General Saprang.

The same General Saprang who makes insane statements about some "terrorist plans" founded in a flat in London...

I mean : everything is connected.

But weren't there at least a dozen people in his delegation? They were probably managers, engineers, tecnicians and what not.

I think most of business trips to other countries by chairmen and the posse on company's money also include a bit of a sightseeing, and they don't travel economy. How's he different? Asians in Europe - you should see how Malaysians spend their time there.

The same General Saprang who makes insane statements about some "terrorist plans" founded in a flat in London...

Could you clarify what exactly was found in that flat, what is the official line of London police, and what exactly they told Saprang, and why should he be considered insane? Apparently you know something.

Oh yes I know something Plus...

I just know that Saprang is insane.

Assistant Army chief General Saprang Kalayanamitr yesterday sought to downplay public fears following his revelation that British police had found a terrorist handbook in a London apartment that mentioned bombing targets in Bangkok, saying it had been discovered long ago, after end of the Cold War.

Or Harry may have stayed at home to toke on the chillum, or fill his lungs from a bong :o:D

I got it now... the press got it wrong and took comments out of context (how surprising :o) and blew it out of proportion (typical). :D

The report of a possible terrorist attack in Bangkok stemmed from remarks by assistant army chief Saprang Kalayanamitr, also deputy secretary-general of the Council for National Security, during a lecture on Bangkok security given to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's district directors on Thursday. During the lecture, he said British police had found a copy of a document outlining a plan to launch terrorist attacks in Bangkok. They found the plan in a London apartment. Gen Saprang yesterday clarified the document in question was old information, dating back to the end of the Cold War. It warned of terrorist attacks in several cities, including Bangkok. For this reason, authorities in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand should be aware of the existence of such a plan and put up their guard. Gen Saprang blamed the media for blowing his remarks about the document out of proportion.

I'm missing this big jump into making it a "Thaksin link", as well. :o:D

If the terrorist book was discovered in London, is Thaksin the only resident in London? :D

Are there no other terrorists in London? :D

Yes, but they're all out on the piss.

Based on the little bomb last night, it looks like this was some sort of news plant to get people thinking in the wrong direction. The timing is impeccable. Unfortunately for the bad guys they have yet to figure out how mind games of this type work.

So it appears the 'discovery' was made many years ago.

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2007/05/06...al_30033481.php

"In a related development, Yongyuth called for vigilance in Bangkok, where renewed fear of terror threats was growing. It was sparked by last week's revelation by General Saprang Kalayanamitr that a terror-attack plot for Bangkok had been uncovered in London.

Saprang later clarified his remarks, saying the discovery had been made in the early 1990s."

Talk about scaremongering.

He's looking for a cushy retirement job with Fox News where the "terrorist threat" never drops

below amber.
