David Fincher says ‘Joker’ is “a betrayal of the mentally ill”

David Fincher says he believes 2019’s Joker to be “a betrayal of the mentally ill”.

The DC film, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, has received criticism since its release for its portrayal of mental illness, and was later crowned the most complained about movie of 2019.

In a new interview with The Telegraph, director Fincher, who made his big screen return this week with new film Mank, likened Joker to a “trap”.

‘I don’t think anyone would have looked at that material and thought, “Yeah, let’s take [Taxi Driver’s] Travis Bickle and [The King of Comedy’s] Rupert Pupkin and conflate them, then trap him in a betrayal of the mentally ill, and trot it out for a billion dollars’,” the director said.

According to the article referenced within the article, all it took was a whole 20 (twenty) complaints out of a total of 149 complaints to BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) the for it to achieve this monumental status.

All this shows is that 20....no...149 people have too much time on their hands.

I thought the movie (although admittedly somewhat disturbing) was a masterpiece.

Me too!

To follow up on my original comment...

I usually don’t follow directors and after looking at David Fincher’s resume, I have to say, he has directed and produced some incredible movies.

But...and this is a big but.

How is his accusation...or should I say projection any different than how mental health issues are portrayed in some of his own movies such as ‘Fight Club’ with its portrayal of schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder.

And his depiction (and subtle mockery) of self help groups and their attendees (Claire from the cancer group) or Bob from the testicular cancer survivors group?

Is that Ok with you Mr. Fincher?  Or will you be cancelling yourself and self flagellating in the near future begging for forgiveness for your past sins.

What a joke.  Great director turned into a politically correct SJW.

Should actually be “him too”.  See my above post just posted after you.

It’s an outstanding film for drawing attention to the plight of the mentally ill in an indifferent society.

But ugh, you just can’t please everyone. More cultural inclusion and girl power? Disney made a new Mulan. Then they complained about the actress’ politics. Too many white superheroes? Well then there was Black Panther. Then they complained about stereotypes.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
