Students from 23 schools will be ‘bad’ on Tuesday and dress casually, says ‘Bad Student’ group

The group that mockingly calls itself “Bad Student” announced on Sunday that students from 23 schools will attend classes in casual clothes on Tuesday in line with the call from KKC Pakee Students group in Khon Kaen.

 

KKC launched a clarion call last Thursday asking for students across the country to not be afraid of questioning the need to wear school uniforms and dress casually on Tuesday to signify their stance.

 

“We urge you all to wear casual clothes to school instead of uniforms to question its importance. Will students be allowed to attend class if they are not in uniform? Will casual clothes increase inequality in school? Why is focusing on uniforms so important in school?,” the KKC statement said.

 

The 23 schools whose students will shun uniforms on Tuesday are: Samsenwittayalai, Triam Udom Suksa, Kanlayanawat, Suranari Witthaya, Chonkanyanukoon, Sarawittaya, Horwang, Triam Udom Suksa Pattanakarn, Khon Kaen Wittayayon, Srinakharinwirot University:

Demonstration School, Satriwithaya, Satriwithaya 2, Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni), Siyanuson, Matthayom Taksin Rayong, Suankularb Wittayalai Rangsit, Benjamarachalai, Chonradsadornumrung, Kaennakhon Wittayalai, Demonstration School of Khon Kaen University, Rittiyawannalai, Udon Pittayanukoon and Satri Rachinuthit.

 

Most of these schools are in Bangkok.

That's the reason for school uniforms; to reduce the appearance of economic inequality. A student from a poor family will tend to wear cheap, casual clothes, whereas a student from a rich family will tend to wear expensive, designer, casual clothes. This might tend to create an 'inferiority complex' among the poor students.

That'll show 'em.

You think each kid in the school doesn't already know where they stand economically compared to the others? You think they're stupid and blind?

It's much more than clothes that shows the difference. Shoes, hairstyles, backpacks, jewelry, and countless other things advertise it. 

 

There is only do much that can be done to insulate kids from the unfair world that they will enter sooner or later.

Yes. That's right. I don't think each kid knows where they stand economically compared with other kids, unless there are obvious signs such as expensive fancy clothes, jewelry, expensive watches and so on, or unless certain kids boast about how rich their parents are.

So watches, jewelry, and boasting are not allowed at school? How about fancy backpacks, notebooks, school supplies, etc. These things are all homogenized too? And the kids are too stupid to notice? You're kidding yourself.

I think you've missed the point. A school should not encourage economic and social disparity. The rule that every student should wear the same type of clothes, that is, a uniform, helps to reduce the social and economic disparity, but doesn't necessarily eliminate it.

What schools should do is encourage individualism, free thinking, self-respect, self-reliance, and self-expression. Uniforms don't help any of those things. 

 

It's not up to the schools to teach economic or social parity either. This is false and misleading by itself. The world doesn't and never has worked that way. It cannot, because humans are all different and some will be superior to others in various ways regardless of it being fair or not.

  Schools should be teaching kids how to read and write and about Maths , Geography and history etc .

  Collectively all learning together as a group and wearing a uniform helps that IMO.

Here's an interesting explanation from the Guardian Newspaper, about the benefits of school uniforms.

 

"A school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance. Perhaps most importantly, a uniform means students don't have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn't so important. There is no competition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on students and parents.
 

Potential bullies have one less target for their insults; it's hard to make fun of what someone is wearing when you're dressed exactly the same."
