As  commuters shun public transport and look to keep fit during pandemic- induced lockdowns, the demand for bicycles has skyrocketed, giving some Cambodian industries a much-needed break. According to the Ministry of Commerce, more than 1.5 million bicycles were exported as of the end of the third quarter this year, bringing in some $400 million in revenue. Between January and September, half a million bicycles were exported to the US, 360,000 to Germany, 270,000 to the UK and 150,000 to Belgium.

 

The continued growth in bicycle exports has seen the Kingdom become the largest bicycle supplier for the EU market. Hong Vanak, an economic researcher at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, told the New Straits Times in May that growth in bicycle exports is a vital contributor to the Kingdom’s economic development.

 

“Although the COVID-19 pandemic [continues to] decrease global export [volumes], Cambodia’s [success] in growing in bicycle exports will also [trigger an increased] demand for bicycle parts. [Despite] some orders [being] cancelled during the first quarter [of 2020] because of the pandemic, Cambodia’s bicycle exports [have managed] to remain in the green,” he said.

probably decent quality --- department store stuff to mid-range bike shop models.

 

i'd bet they're following apple's foxconn chinese business model.  manufacture the components in taiwan and korea (or singapore and malaysia for bike componenets, taiwan for frames), ship to cambodia for cheap labor assembly and packaging, export for sale.

 

most of the profit goes to the multinationals, with small change to the host assembly country.  china makes about $7 per iphone, so i suspect cambodia retains less'n a buck per bike.

What types of bicycles does Cambodia produce?  Mountain bikes, road bikes, kids bikes, hybrids, etc.?

Do they manufacture for certain brands and are they hi-end, mid range, or Walmart Tesco-Lotus type bicycles?

Made in China, assembled in Cambodia.. I am amazed the EU let them get away with it as I think the Chinese would otherwise face very high tariffs if they were to export to the EU directly..
