ZURICH (Reuters) - World Health Organization (WHO) officials said on Friday an international team led by the U.N. agency would be going to China in the first week of January to investigate the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mike Ryan, WHO's top emergency expert, said international experts would go to the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the first cases of COVID-19 were detected last December.

"We still don't have a take-off date because we are working on the logistics around visas and flights. We do expect the team to be going there in the first week of January. There will be quarantine arrangements," Ryan told a news conference.

"The team will visit Wuhan, that's the purpose of the mission. The point of the mission is to go to the original point at which human cases were detected. They'll fully expect to do that," he added.

WHO officials also said that three-quarters of cases were occurring in the Americas, and thanked Canada for committing to donate vaccine doses to other countries.

Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical lead on COVID-19, said the agency was in touch with South African researchers who identified a new variant of the SARS-CoV2 virus.

A holiday trip for the WHO team….

China will have a carefully composed and thoroughly sanitized report ready for them...long before they even arrive.

The WHO people will spend their time taking choreographed tours, attending dinners, accepting gifts, and posing for photos.

They will accept and endorse... without question....whatever China tells them.

This has to be one of the best jokes of the year. Only a year-plus short.

Next the Chinese will tell the Australians See, we did what you asked for, give us your commodities for discount.

And the conclusion we be that it was brought in to China by a foeigner, and the Chinese Government will be congratulated for their swift actions ...... again.

I wonder what they'll be allowed to find?  The leaders in Beijing are just like my mother.

Whenever anyone important comes to visit, they only see the good china.

No pre-concieved ideas then. Refreshing.

All they will find are people partying, like there was never any Covid 19 virus.

The WHO will report exactly what China tells them to report.. End of!

With winter coming on in China maybe all the exporters of coal to China should stop sending it there As they just stopped importing it from Australia. And don't worry WHO your suitcases filled with USD'S will be here when you get here.

Any proof that WHO are on the take, or are you just sounding off?

Doesn’t China already own WHO?

I don't know why they're even bothering to go when they could just read thaivisa to find out what happened. ????

Shouldn't WHO go to the Samut Sakhon market instead now that the virus has magically appeared in the seafood market there instead of the Wuhan seafood market?

The virus is long-exterminated in Wuhan , what's the point of going there.

That's a good question. The most interesting to investigate are DNA samples, but they are already available WW on computer file.

It is  mothballed and been cleaned  way back...unfortunately ..in terms of identifying a specific  source. But at the time the priority was  to eliminate possible infectious cause  ahead of preservation for possible verification of  source. But  despite that  other retrospective  analysis of the time and date of those identified  as early cases indcate that Wuhan was not the epicentre of the community infection initially but those  other earlier infected  people brought it into  Wuhan. The genuine mystery is that those  cases were also isolated originally .

It seems that overall  scientific opinion is that this virus is  not  engineered due to the structure of it is not something that can be achieved in a laboratory. The truth will likely never be known  beyond  the fact it has come into existence.

For Effings sake a year later they decide to go on a jolly after the event!!!

No wonder so many countries don't trust them - if it quacks like a duck waddles like a duck looks like a duck & tastes like a duck - 99% of the time it's a duck - just like where the virus came from - China!!¡

Looking forward to the confirmation of your opinion that many countries don't trust them.

Well, what do you suggest Australia should do ?  Do you think Australia will be stupid enough to say "look, China, you started this virus, we don't want to sell our coal and iron ore to you".

Okay, about the bit saying that the bug was taken into China by a foreigner, we know that didn't happen.

But congratulating the Chinese government for their swift action in removing the bug ?  I think we should do that, and try to see how they managed to do it.  The bug is still killing loads of people in America, Britain and Europe. Why is that ?  Why has the bug disappeared in China ? How is it that life has gone back to being normal in China ? Let's try to copy what the Chinese government has done. Let's try and learn from them. It might reduce the number of deaths in Britain.

When WHO representatives, including US nationals,  previously visited Wuhan to investigate Covid they did excellent work and reported by WHO. The timeline of the WHO response is available below; as an example the 24/02/20 summary report after visiting Wuhan by the investigation team. Might be a good idea for some members to do some basic fact checking before writing off WHO efforts, including those by the US experts at WHO.
