PM pushes for more Covid-19 vaccine deals

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the Public Health Ministry to negotiate deals for Covid-19 vaccines with other pharmaceutical firms, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said on Thursday.

 

He said the PM's aim is for at least 50 per cent of the population inoculated against the virus next year. 

 

On November 27, the ministry and AstraZeneca signed an agreement for the purchase of 26 million doses, which should be delivered in the first half of 2021. 

 

Thailand has recently been hit with a new wave of infections.

Reason being it is the cheapest of the ones that have started to be used but only 70%-84% affective .

You are OK with trying getting to the moon, buying submarines  etc.....Though its OK if only 50% of your population is vaccinated?  Will there be a lucky dip to see who the 50% will be?!

It should be100% not 50% and why a year or more.  Again are going to have three or four outbreaks if you wait that long.  The hell with the tourist they will not come back.

 (I really do love that emoji). More like 70-95%. Don't judge a book by its cover. It cost billions to develop but is cheaply produced and easy to store, which is the point isn't it? Efficacy all to do with how it is administered. Half dose + full dose = around 95% +or-.

And how many countries roughly do you see as having 100% of their populations vaccinated by the end of this year. My prediction is 0.

Well said. The  general negative tone of the Thai bashing here is getting much more pronounced. The article also states hoping for at least 50%. Which as you point out considering other factors seems reasonable.

Well  I admit that at some times it seems that half the population wear some sort of uniform!

 

My cynicism is directed not at the efficacy of the vaccine, nor at the amount spent on it, but at the way (demographically) it will be administered, and frankly, the part that influence, corruption and politics will play in that process.

thailand is not importing it, but will be making by themselves, for thailand and neighbouring countries.

 

so it's matter of transferring technology and starting production as soon as possible, now.

There is no need for thousands to die to justify vaccination program. Those 61 perished and expected prospects of tens of thousands infections from the second part of January (leading to large figures of dead) is serious enough.

Singapore has already started it's vaccination program, even they don't have a second wave.

Malaysia is buying vax for 83% of population and starting in February.

The UK is buying 200mln vax for a population of 70mln, so people will have more than one kind of vax, in case some appear not effective or short acting.

 

In thailand it's not about health, but about kick backs for the elite. Astra Zeneca will be made by pharma company belonging to Crown Property.

Decision makers do expect envelopes from producers.

Probably that's why private bangkok hospital which wanted to import vax now for it's patients, was stopped from buying, criticised and had to apologise to the ministry.

The health minister is not a doctor and not connected with health sector. He is in engineer who got his post through political deal, and not based on competence.

No worries; they will make sure the 'most important' people; and we know who they are, will be immunised first.  In Thailand only the 1% matter and the rest are cannonfodder.   However; Farang are considered even lower than Dog Excrement !

Wow, this is an overdue discovery.  In the real world, it’s hard to understand why these deals were not set up months ago as other countries did.  After 32 years in Thailand I can honestly say they have left me speechless on this one.

The above post is nonsense, don't think posters are Thai bashing, it comes down to reality, why only 50% of the population to be vaccinate, and by the end of 2021, its a race against time, to overcome this virus world wide, and you talk about Thailand being a poor Country....?  But they spend money on Subs, aircraft carriers, new Aircraft, and want to spend 3 billion on sending a spacecraft to the moon...., the Government need to prioritise what iare good for its citizens....
