gafdtomaka366
Let's take UAE. 99.9% of people in UAE wear masks. A fine for not wearing one is somewhat 1000 usd. Facts? Yes. Despite that everyone wears a masks there have been around 1000+ new infections found daily and for over half a year. This is also a fact. Question: do masks work? P.S. "But if not masks, they'd be millions of trillions of quadrillions cases instead of just 1000+ ones" - no. Barnabe
99% of people wear seatbelts, yet thousands of people still die on car crashes with them on. Seatbelts don't work! 1 1
dabhand
Likely that a high % of the positives, like Singapore and recently in Thailand, are coming from the migrant workers population. Living in cramped accommodation is much more likely to be the cause of the increasing rates.

This is the right answer. Is there evidence that masks don't work? No. Is there evidence that they work? Nope. Since we don't know, it's best to use them anyway. They cause no harm and are cheap. It's just a piece of cloth on your face <deleted>. I don't get the mask hate.
mommysboy
A few studies suggest masks work in casual situations. But possibly are not good where exposure is repeated or prolonged. No they won't stop a pandemic.

Natai Beach
It is because Arab blokes take the mask off to give each other a bit of a kiss when they greet each other. It’s the culture over there.

Jingthing
They a mitigation measure. Of course they work as a mitigation measure. But nobody has claimed they provide perfect protection. There are many reasons why they don't always work. For examples -- People not socially distancing while wearing the masks Eating in crowded poorly vented restaurants (masks are off when eating of course) Improper mask wearing (not covering nose, etc.) Improper hygiene with masks (for example touching a dirty mask and then rubbing eyes) Unclean masks, not cleaning or replacing often enough Last but not least -- spread within households / mixing with non-household people in household or socially (masks are generally worn in public, not at home) To add there is also scientific evidence that wearing masks can reduce the viral load if you are infected, resulting in less severe cases. Even if infected, the smaller the viral load the better. Masks of course work both ways. Mostly to prevent people that are infected from spreading their viral spray but also as somewhat of a barrier to the wearer. placeholder
There are 2 reasons that these nations such such a high rate of infections. The first is the relatively huge number of foreign laborers. These people sleep in communal rooms with large numbers of people. The second is that because they are very wealthy, the have a very high rate of testing. Since these foreign laborers tend to be very young, even though they are infected they are mostly asymptomatic. 2 Mideast countries have highest confirmed virus rates Aggressive testing boosted the number of confirmed cases as health officials in Bahrain and Qatar targeted vulnerable labor camps and neighborhoods, where migrant workers from Asia sleep, eat and live up to dozen people per room. “This is why globally we failed to control, I think, the infection because simply the response has been focused on trying to find cases and isolate them and quarantine their contacts,” said Laith Abu-Raddad, a disease researcher at Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar. “Now, if most people getting the infection are actually spreading the infection without even knowing it, this really does not actually work.” 2 Mideast countries have highest confirmed virus rates (apnews.com)
