Easy Thai For Absolute Beginners

BTW, what is up with Sing-HA beer?

Same, same as Taksin "Shinawat-RA"

It's a letter-by-letter transliteration ignoring the fact that some ending letters are silent.

Okay, so answer me this, you wise-guys: :D

Why doesn't India's prime minister write his name as Manmohan Sing-HA?

Why isn't the world-famous golfer known as Vijay Sing-HA?

Why do all Sikh males spell their names as "Singh" in Roman letters?

Quite simply, because that's how it is pronounced!

And they should know: they are from where the word originated, after all.

The ending /h/ is obviously siilent, when read by others, and it is apparently there as a nod to the silent character in the native original. That's so obvious that even Western sportscasters(!) and facile talking-head newscasters get it.

Sorry, I don't mean to make it an obsession. It's just a "pet peeve," and it sticks in my craw... :o

Hey, how would you say "pet peeve" in Thai?

Cheers.

What does "ma got mia" mean? Sounds like a good one to know.

As for "sticks in my craw," I don't think that would translate. A craw is actually the preliminary stomach of birds. Sometimes large things won't pass into the digestive tract, and get stuck in the craw. As English slang, the term came to mean something you can't stomach; something you just cannnot abide.

But there must be expressions in Thai that mean the same thing.
