Venturing Abroad From Surin

Featured Replies

I live in Surin and my daughter and her husband will be visiting us in August, mid-rainy season. We want to go overland into Cambodia (Ankor) or Laos (Bolovens Plateau, Mekong cascades, Wat Phu etc), though I shall not yet risk taking my own pickup.

Can anyone help me as follows.

1. The Ankor option. The usual entry point is Chong Jom, but I read in the press that the road from Chong Sanggam to Siem Reap is being rebuilt and presumably should have been finished before the rains. Can anyone tell me which route is recommended (via Chong Jom or Chong Sanggam) and whether this new road has been finished yet. (I gather the Chong Jom one is a 'red road' and so will be quite bad during the rains. And what transport is available at the border.

2. Or if we go into Laos from Ubon, how are the roads and what particular places and resorts would anyone recommend?

Viva Thaivisa and thanks in advance.

Okay, a simple question to all of you going to the party at the Farang Connection.

Is the new road under construction between Chong Sanggam to Ankor finished yet???

Andrew

PS I'm in UK at the moment and was going to make a special trip back for the party and then back to UK, just so I could see Martin's appreciative smile (who says he's an Eeyore?), but I couldn't get the flight bookings. Now I've saved enough money to fly to Ankor... but I still want to know if they've finished the new road from.... !!!)

Not as far as I know Andrew. The road on our side is almost finished to....................................Chong Chom. Then there is a 50km hike across country to where it starts on the other side.
