Government spokesman Anucha Buraphachaisri announced that the cabinet has agreed to spend 5% more on school lunches.

This will raise expenditure from 20 baht per person to 21 baht.

It affects 5,894,420 children in 49,861 schools nationwide from the first year of kindergarten to P6 (the last year of primary education).

It is costing the government more than 25 billion baht with 23.5 billion to the state sector and 1.8 billion in the private sector.

Sanook reported that students would be cheering the news.

Skeptics might also point to the fact that in the past unscrupulous school directors have also seen creaming off the top of food budgets as an easy way to get state funds, notes Thaivisa.

Hopefully on this occasion the increase in budget will see its way into the hungry mouths of the children rather than the pockets of bent school officials.

The improved lunches are expected in the second term of 2021 academic year.

1 whole extra baht, that will get them more rice but less protein.  How much of that 1 baht will find the pockets of the lunch administration.

Actually,  in a school of 2,000 kids it will make a difference.

Some of the government schools do a pretty good lunch on the whole.

Its only when the thieving principle rips off the budget it goes down the pan.
