Recently vaccinated people need not quarantine post COVID-19 exposure: CDC

(Reuters) - People who have received the full course of COVID-19 vaccines can skip the standard 14-day quarantine after exposure to someone with the infection as long as they remain asymptomatic, U.S. public health officials advised.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Wednesday the vaccines have been shown to prevent symptomatic COVID-19, thought to play a greater role in the transmission of the virus than asymptomatic disease.

"Individual and societal benefits of avoiding unnecessary quarantine may outweigh the potential but unknown risk of transmission (among vaccinated individuals)," the CDC said.

The agency has laid down a strict criteria for people who would no longer have to quarantine after the vaccinations, including those who have received both the doses of a two-dose vaccine.

People who choose not to quarantine should do so only if they received their last dose within three months, and should only avoid 14 days quarantine after their last shot, the time it takes to develop immunity, CDC said.

Fully vaccinated persons who do not quarantine should still watch for symptoms for 14 days following an exposure.

Two-dose vaccines from Pfizer Inc and Moderna Inc have been authorized for emergency use in the United States. Johnson & Johnson applied for a U.S. authorization of its single-dose shot last week.

As of Wednesday, 44,769,970 doses of COVID-19 vaccines in the country had been administered and 65,972,575 doses had been delivered.

I get my second shot on the 4th of March but I still intend to mask up,distance, and follow all safety protocols to protect my fellow citizens Incase I’ve been exposed I’ll probably do this till fall to be safe. Not out of fear but out of concern and respect for my fellow citizens

And imo you are wise to do so. I have spent days reading the various science and mathematical implications of model projection and prediction. It is difficult at this time for anyone to say when a safe period is because there are so many variables involved not least one's own physical make up and condition. There is simply not the data to say how long a vaccination will last or might it be like other virus infections where one has the choice/advice to receive another. Hopefully, in another year or so there will info and guidance on vaccination trends and of course, if any additional mutations occur.

I thought I'd heard repeatedly from Dr. Fauci and Dr. Sanjay Gupta (CNN contributor) that you could still spread Covid even after receiving the vaccine.

Here’s Why Vaccinated People Still Need to Wear a Mask - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

There are several mechanisms of virus escapology and they have been known since HIV days...there might be others we have yet to discover. The first and most obvious is that if one's immune system is slow or impaired it could mean that even with vaccination, immune system response may not be sufficient, some viruses will escape. Others are more technical such as the pathways in which some virus bodies can become 'invisible' to the immune system and apparently, there is some research results that imply that even a vaccine may help in this escape, basically the virus gets a camouflage. I hasten to add, whether this is so for all viruses, is, apparently, not yet known with full confidence and may only refer to some viruses and not others.

All this barely scratches the surface of what viruses can do and some of this is because of complex chemical reactions. For example, in on the Covid 19 (a RNA virus) body surface the are protein protrusions, spike proteins, and like all proteins, can fold into any of the very, very large number shapes (depending on protein length). So theoretically, even an interaction with a host cell could change the protein configuration and there you go...the possible beginning of a mutation.

Wearing a mask. We've all heard arguments for and against but science uses the physics of turbulence and fluid mechanics to find the answers. In Covid 19 infections, in short, the ordinary mask does offer some protection but never 100%. How much % depends on many factors. For example, if for any reason one exhales excessively water droplet leakage can rise significantly and that also means that the same pathway can be used as virus entrance too.

But look on the bright side...we are learning to live with all these potential threats and treatments will improve. Yes I know, not much consolation for those that have died and that is sad.

A well laid out and thoughtful post. My "Reader's Digest condensed version" goes something like this:

We really don't know, so letting people loose upon entering your country with no quarantine is inviting trouble.
