Bangkok buses get exhaust emission tests

The test today was performed at the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority’s (BMTA) Bang Khen depot, where most of the buses in service were found to emit a standard quality of exhaust gas, and are properly maintained according to the maintenance schedule

Once again the stationary vehicle freestanding acceleration test as depicted in the pic' does not give a true reflection of the vehicle working and loaded .. as in ascending hills when they work their hardest ..

There is no mention of the specialised analyser equipment needed to quantify the above in relation to " standard quality of exhaust gas " ..

The two main pollutants from a Diesel engine exhaust are compressed unburned or incompletely burned fuel and oil particulates down to PM 2.5 and Nitrogen Oxides ..

The smoke tester in the pic' merely measures the density of the particles being emitted and no more .. it does not analyze the output of the exhaust in the same way as analyser's for petrol engines function which test for specific elements ( CO , HC , CO2 ) ..

I guess that means 1,084 drivers didn’t have any money with them. I drive a lot in Bangkok and I’d say at least 50% of the buses leave a cloud behind them.

That smoke cloud extends from BKK to Chumphon to the south and Chiang Rai to the north! After a brief respite during the Chinese new year they are back to burning the rice fields. Toxic levels of 2.5 PM air pollution in Hua Hin this morning again. ????

Pollution is the same as flooding here. If it isn't happening in Bangkok nobody's bothered.

You only use specialised equipment if you want to find something.

Nuff said.

Exactly.  Its.not from vehicles.  Agri burning of sugar cane and rice.  Money doesnt want to be parted with.  Perhaps when no tourists come from November through April (the air is bad for HALF the year) because of the toxic air they will remedy the problem.  Doubt it though.

Bus looks like its 50 years old.  They all need to be scrapped and replaced with nice, air-conditioned, low-polluting models.

Nice, air conditioned buses that the locals on <300 baht wages can't afford to take to work?

No, nice, air-conditioned buses that all the locals can afford to take to work, whatever their wage.  You're not going to get anybody out of their cars with those old crapped-out bus horrors.

It's not as if the majority own cars you're going to get them out of.

Those crapped out bus horrors are often standing room only, in spite of their condition.  Because a lot of BKK'ers can't even afford the MRT and BTS without spending a significant portion of their wages just to get back and forth.

I'd be all for subsidizing nice buses so everyone can afford them- reducing the car traffic.  But Thais don't seem to want to pay the taxes required.  And newer buses with air conditioning are going to have to charge more if they're not subsidized.

I always wondered if the buses were worn out or never tuned up ?

It always looks like they have one or 2 injectors stuck open and just loading up on extra fuel ,

that has to cost a lot of money in fuel costs ,

Many of these buses were the old Mercedes powered buses that got a Japanese engine transplant years  ago,

But I still like taking them ,  you get to see the "real" city thru the smoke .....55555

only Hisos take  the BTS ....
