BANGKOK (NNT) - The Labor Ministry is wrapping up a bill to protect 20 million casual workers, and hopes to table a draft for Cabinet approval next month.

Labor Minister Suchart Chomklin said casual workers have never had protection laws before, so they do not have a public policy that helps them raise their quality of life or a social safety net to fall back on in times of crisis like Covid-19.

He said that if the law is passed, it would kickstart the process of registering millions more in the workforce and pave the way for them to enjoy essential benefits in future.

As of now, about 20 million casual workers in all occupations are not registered, and are not members of the national Social Security fund. During the pandemic, the government, therefore, has had no data about these unregistered workers to provide them with welfare and assistance.
