I'm planning a trip to Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines and USA. I want to use my Siam Commercial Bank ATM (Mastercard with Cirrus) in these countries. The bank told me I could, for a 100 baht fee. I just wanted to make sure I don't get stuck without access to my money. Has anyone else used this type of card overseas?

Thanks.

The card should work fine. I've used the same card in multiple countries (NZ, AU, HK, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.) without problem.

Be sure to have some kind of backup, though, in case it is de-magnetized, lost, or stolen, etc.

Alternatively you could open another account at the same branch and keep its ATM card in a different place. (That would make it easier to transfer money between accounts - which you would do by automated phone system - if you need to)

There are two types of debit/ATM cards issued by SCB. A true ATM card that cannot be used for purchases from merchants and "HIP" cards that may be used for purchases like a credit card.

I spent a year in Australia and used both cards without difficulty, although some banks wouldn't take them, while others did. I always looked for the Cirrus logo on the ATM machine, but some just didn't work. Avoid panic and just try another machine at another bank or a "private" ATM machine that doesn't have a bank identity. They are often for "accepting" but the fees are higher.

I've used SCB ATM card in Kyoto, Japan last year.

There was only one ATM in the entire city of Kyoto where I could use it.

I used the same card recently in the UK with no problems.

Anybody know if you get the Thai exchange rate, or the better one obroad?

I'm pretty sure that you have to first make arrangements with the Thai bank. I tried my Siam Commercial card the last time I was in the US and it did NOT work.

WOW!! A voice from the past and it is my own.

While my card was not honored by some banks in Australia, they never "ate it" and I am sure there are many reasons cards don't work, one is a typo during entry. As long as the card is within the time frame indicated on its surface to be good, it should work in the system indicated on its back with the logo for Cirrus or the like.

My card always worked at Westpac ATM machines and I would try to use it there first.

As far as ID is concerned, it is up to the local merchant. I suspect the big stores such as Cole, David Jones or Meyer wouldn't ask for ID but the asian mom and pop stores probably would.

I have noted that Visa and Mastercard logos have been added to some ATM or HIP cards and I think with that logo on your card, you can go into the bank and make cash withdrawals, ID would be a must in such situations. I have never taken money out that way due to the heavy fees involved, but it is a last resort if all else fails.

Good Luck.
