Hi, please can you help? Someone close to me is ill in hospital with a disease called:

โรค ไข่ เลือด ออก

disease / egg / blood / out ????

Does anyone know the English medical term for this condition? I'm concerned about them and would appreciate any help.

Thank you.

โรค ไข้ เลือด ออก

I'm not a doctor, but I believe you probably mean

Rok-kai-leuad-auk .... disease-fever-blood-out

which may mean dengue [hemoraghic] fever.

-NG

(sorry about the spelling mistakes)

Thank you NaiGreg, I've checked and it is โรค ไข้ เลือด ออก ( 'fever' not 'egg')

Is this really dengue fever?

??? ??? ????? ???

Good eye, NaiGreg. It's gotta be fever, not egg.

Hemorrhagic fever.

Probably. There are several hemorrhagic fevers, but dengue is common here.

I've had it, and it's no fun. Like malaria, it really saps your energy, and so you have to exercise to build it back up once you've recovered.

and Dengue is often called hemorrhagic even when it doesn't progress that far .....

the BF had Dengue ... he was misreable but never THAT sick!

Ok thank you Mangkorn. I hope it's not serious.

Not critical. Dengue does kill some small children, but most relatively healthy adults just have to suffer it, and be miserable, as jdinasia says.

Phewwfff. Thank you everybody for your help. Just had a long read up about it on various webpages. Seems as though it can be a very unpleasant fever but only reaches the hemorraghic stage in untreated or more extreme cases, and then there's a 5% chance it can be fatal. The name in itself sounds horrendous ('disease fever blood coming out!) but they do seem to label even the normal dengue fever cases by the hemorrhagic term. I hope the person I know is okay.

Thanks again for your replies.
