BANGKOK (NNT) - The Interior Ministry has instructed governors of border provinces to step up the prevention of illegal border crossings to prevent the spread of highly contagious Covid-19 variants from neighboring countries.

 

Ministry Permanent Secretary Chatchai Promlert said the ministry is concerned that carriers of mutated versions of the coronavirus may slip across the border, which will complicate disease control efforts.

 

He said governors must work with local military units to beef up border control and curb movements of migrant workers by setting up barricades and stepping up surveillance, particularly along natural border crossings.

 

Mr Chatchai said governors have to collaborate with local police, immigration offices, governing officers, public health officials and customs officials to set up checkpoints to screen travellers and vehicles transporting goods from neighboring countries.

Your telling me this hasn't been done already.  These folks are unreal.  Broken records.

I suspect the origins of the current surge include:
- illegal entrants,
- sloppiness in the quarantine system,
- big-wigs skipping quarantine,

The spreading was then assisted by:
- travel that wasn't really necessary (e.g. Songkran),
- people persisting in attending large gatherings in enclosed spaces.

They are all factors within government control.

 

Its just another load of verbal cr$p from the government buffoons to appear as if they know what they are doing and yet another illustration that the pantomime season is still in full swing in Thailand.  So as the common panto line goes, then from the picture " Look Behind You"  ????

"Shh, don't point at the border, or you will give away its location!"

"No worries, too hot to point, anyway."

Give everybody a 6 month amnesty, on extensions, 90 day reports, etc..

Close the Immigration Offices.

That'll release thousands of Immigration Officers to add to the current forces doing the border patrols.

This is SO much more important than worrying about air arrivals.

It is actually a nonsense to destroy your tourist industry, supposedly to protect your population against Covid, when your massive land borders, with countries swarming with the virus, are largely uncontrolled.

Its not just illegal crossing which is an issue.

Every day thousands of trucks are crossing the borders to provide goods to countries like Laos.

Now Laos, being land locked, needs those supplies coming in but I hope precautions like testing and isolation for the drivers is being done.

so far no outcome, they are still facilitating human trafficking, as they were doing for ever in the past. Those 550 000 slaves in thailand come through borders and full participation of officials

Good luck with that. There are thousands and thousands of kilometers of border, impossible to monitor, very easy to slip in (or out) of the country. 

Troops walking the border to find legal immigrants crossing into Thailand is about as believable as Thai police in patrol cars chasing down errant drivers and issuing tickets for moving violations.
They are mythical beasts as rare as unicorn.

The reality?  A lots of uniforms under umbrellas at border checkpoints just like lots of uniformed BIB under umbrellas at road check points.

TIT.  No one is allowed to break up monopolies or money-making operations, illegal or otherwise, as long as payola is flowing in the right direction.

Too little too late.

 

They should have been doing this months ago instead of spraying the ground on the border.

Always willing to blame someone else for the spread of covid-19, they really need to look closer to home....

Myanmar has shipped about 600,000 tonnes of corns under zero tariff to Thailand this year, Chair U Min Khaing of Myanmar Corn Industrial Association said. Myanmar is sending corns through Myawady and Tachilek borders.

That's not entirely true, army rangers do a lot of patrols in border areas. I have been in villages close to the border several times when they pulled up in a big Humvee, which was equipped with a big caliber machine gun. I could sense from the villagers that the rangers were not exactly welcome there, though.
